Us non union members work there like everyone else and if ever I have had a problem and spoke about it to people at work, one of the first things they would advice me to do is to go and see the union rep regardless of membership.

This has also meant that I couldn't go out on strike as much as I may want to not being in the union.I will keep on working for the RM until I can find other employment and using whatever resources the RM offer should I have any problems in the future.
Now just remind me what was the original post again??? :dance
Industrial action by workers who are not trade union members
If you take part in industrial action when you are not a trade union member you are normally treated as taking part in unofficial action. This means that if you are dismissed while taking part in the action you normally have no right to complain of unfair dismissal.

You can still claim if the reason for your dismissal was automatically unfair.

You are treated as taking part in official action if both:

•members of a trade union are taking part in it
•the action is official industrial action taken by their trade union

This means that the law treats you in the same way as it treats trade union members. Your rights if you are dismissed depend on whether the industrial action is protected or unprotected and when you are dismissed.

Actually, there's nothing preventing a non-Union member Striking with the rest of us. Non-members don't get any say in whether the Strike takes place, or when to go back in. But they can, and do, refuse to cross the Picket Lines.

I know that some people can be a little harsh, in the way they point this out. But the fact is, that only Union members can be represented by the Union. You can, of course join up, and recieve immediate representation, should you need it. And there are, Union Reps who'll try to help you informally (let's face it. They become Reps to help people, so it's not surprising that this happens). Although that is often frowned upon by Members, because you would be taking, without contributing.

Whether or not someone joins a Union, is their decision. And there are strong views on both sides. But to expect help and representation, without contributing, is totally unreasonable. It's not like it costs much. And besides. If you join, then you'll have a say in what the CWU does. And remember: Many people do a damn sight more than just pay their subs. :hmmmm

Probably just as well you couldn't negotiate your own wages. What do you think you would be earning now if you had? Perhaps you think shouting would have got you a rise every year! Or were you just going to adopt the Oliver Twist approach?

To not be a union member is your decision and it is to be repected. However to those of us that are, please do not call us "sheep". If you believe that I would happily lose pay,(and we have families to support),because "someone told us to do it",you are very very wrong Sir!

The union,in my case, stood by me many many times. In other industries it costs a lot more to get a decent employment solicitor, and in my opinion have TOO much opinion.Reps to tend to confront the business more so then a few letters. Situations then tend to get sorted in a more common sense approach.

So,no I am not a sheep as I believe collectivly we have acheived more then most.Without the union,it has got to be said, this forum, our voices, our terms and conditions would be far far worse.

For important votes I use them. Which affect our working conditions and choosing main CWU Leader.

But if the vote to vote for area rep or assistant secretary for disabled women group I don't bother.
