Well what can i say for those that are actually reading these posts...Believe me when i say im not anti-union ,im a believer..thats why i joined an ONION ,we all know how hard a reps position can be ,weve probably all seen our reps in action and had probably thought they were either absolute cak or the best thing since sliced bread orthought you could actually do better and some have become reps for that very reason , and i for one applaud these unsung heroes of our workplace who do try and make a difference for the beterment of their colleagues working life so... Ladies and Gentlemen please be upstanding and raise your glass as i toast the .............Union Rep

The list of potential suspects could run to a few pages.......

Re: Health and Safety in Glasgow Mail Center
Well the same old, same old is back in operation in GMC it would seem.During a scheduled "power down" last sunday (june 20th) staff were expected to work without lighting, toilet facilities , canteen and biggest bogey of all NO FIRE ALARM!.we were let down by the power company say managment .....that's as maybe but the staff were let down badly very badly by a management who proved yet again they could'nt give a monkeys for you or your safety,if they could'nt fulfill their H&S commitment to staff then the staff should have been told to go home
.we're told safety is the first pillar in the W C M temple well at this moment in time the temple is looking decidedly lop-sided

Re: Health and Safety in Glasgow Mail Center
I've only just found this topic. But sadly, I'm not at all surprised by what I've just read.
Although things aren't as bad where I am, it would be IMHO if it wasn't for the tireless work of our H&S Reps. Believe me: Good H&S Reps are worth their weight in gold!
But dispite their stringent efforts. The attitude of some of my Collegues, and some Managers, regarding H&S is shocking! We were given pocket sized pads to report any near misses, or unsafe acts. And it's not unusual for me to need to fill in as many as 8 or 10 in a single shift! God knows how the H&S Reps put up with it (people ignoring H&S, despite the constant reminders, and several accidents). And some of the Managers just see me as a complete pain, for keep handing them in.
I can certainly relate to the account of some dipstick pulling away from their trailer, without winding the legs down. I've seen it happen a couple of times myself. There was even a case a couple of years ago, when someone didn't connect up properly to the trailer, and it fell off in the Yard. It took 2 FLTs and someone winding the legs, to lift it back up, so they could hitch up again. And don't even get me started on people using clearly dangerous RSCs (sharp edges, unstable due to badly bent skids, etc.). They're the bane of my life. Particularly as it's usually people like me who end up having to make them safe, by transferring the Mail to another cage. Particularly if the sharp edges are on the front of the cage.
But the one that would be the easiest to fix, if people actually gave a damn about safety. Is the people who don't bother to do their pre-shift checks on Scuds/FLTs, and then wonder what happened, when they break down. Or worse, they have an accident because of a fault that they should have noticed before they set off. For example: Someone got a face full of Hydrolic Fluid, when a badly worn hose on a Forklift burst, while he was lifting a load!
I mean. FFS, it only takes a few minutes to check the bloody thing!
It's a miracle he didn't suffer serious injury, considering how much pressure there is in those Hydrolic Pipes!
If your local H&S Rep can't/won't do anything about the problem, then contact your Area H&S Rep. Your Area H&S Rep can offer support/advice to your local H&S Rep. And if necessary, can step in to sort it out for you.
