Re: REP SHOULD BE ?.
It's like your inside my head....!!! Well worth typing that one out...!!MoNkEyBoY wrote:What destroys all the work a rep puts into the office is more often than not torn to pieces by the lads they are representing.
When will the staff realise this fact instead many jump on the band wagon and start slagging off the rep. Its usually the ones with the biggest mouths and the most to say but dont have the balls to stand for the reps job.
Time after time after time members do not listen to there reps why because they cant see the bigger picture they are so wrapped up in there own little world that they dont give a s**t .
At present the reps job is extremely difficult .There are daily attacks on our members there is so much literature out there to learn its daunting. They get lied to by there DIMS regarding local agreements etc etc etc.
Our rep has asked the lads whilst we are in this dispute not to do nights but what happened the big mouths starting stamping there feet why because they are selfish bar stewards ( agree with me or not on this i dont care). What flabbergasted me with these individuals is that they then chose to do nights 3 hrs after our first strike ended helping clear the back log and they know that if they didnt do it how much of a mess our office would be in.
Its commonly known as the me me syndrome f**k the bigger picture im only interested in the hear and now.
People need to realise that a rep chooses to do the job for the better of the office and for the members of the cwu to have protection during office hours.
Im going to end my little rant now as im getting rather angry and frustrated the more i think about some of the idiots in our office making our reps job harder.

What I think 'Infidel' is talking about is members who will more than often give you their backing....but will always whine the face off you in doing so..! And like you said yourself , some can't see the bigger picture or are so wrapped up in their own agenda..! My office is rock solid,striking,picketing....etc, but there is always so much more whispering and bickering going on in the background...!! I know we should just let it go in one ear and out the other but if it's EVERY FUKIN DAY.....then it does start to grind a man down..!! And in a roundabout kinda way I know what 'Infidel' means about the 'most very opinionated' members who spout off at every topic/proposal but would not stand tall at your side or even step into our shoes as a rep...!! Like a previous post mentioned 'chippin in and gettin chocs for her rep'....sometimes just a simple 'thanks' would do..!! Did I have a bad day today.....? Yes I did ......!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: REP SHOULD BE ?.
Reps, very hard job indeed more so at this time, infidel's point is maybe borne out of frustration some people dont realise the work thats done outwith office hours also. What people tend to forget when people are attacking or underminning reps is,reps do it to potect all workers from management attacks who have no regards for anyone remember if it was such a great job we would all want it but we don't so if your asking me your rep is the only friend (if he is a good one who benefits everyone) you've got.The rep will never please everyone all of the time but with the support of fellow colleaugues he can make a difference in the workplace. The advice that most reps give is always with the best intentions in mind in my experience and being without in your workplace you will find under the current climate very dangerous indeed.

Reps should be ?........released one day a week to address all the crap going on week to week and issues locally that pretty much come up on an hour to hour basis nowadays. Supposed to have happened in our office a few years back but surprise surprise, it never happened !

Re: REP SHOULD BE ?.
I have never refused a member support, but then again i am weak DO compared to others.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:My thoughts are that a rep is only as good as the support he gets from the members of his unit. After all a rep is exactly the same as every postman/postwoman in the office they only difference is that they have decided to take on extra work and hassle voluntarily, and because of this they get release occasionally to help members, negotiate with the management and so they can get trained up on various aspects that help improve the free service they give.
If anyone thinks they have a weak rep,it may mean he does not have enough support and back up from members. If so then perhaps it may be worth setting up an unofficial committee to give them that back up.

Re: REP SHOULD BE ?.
Being a Rep I have seen the darker side of a lot of people and it just amazes me that people will just not stand together.
if they did it would be a lot easier to challenge management over anything!!!
The old saying--'There's nowt queerer than folk!'
How bloody true!
rep's need support to help everyone!
Soap box put away
