Most of these people you are haing a go at, would have been miners, steelworkers,
factory workers, etc twenty-five years ago. They are in the position they are in now
because of the actions of employers and politicians closing mines, steelworks, and factories
in the name of modernisation and business efficiency, and are left to rot on the dole,
and turn to crime and drugs, and survive as best they can.
I know it is difficult having to deal with the crime and anti-social behaviour that social
deprivation can lead to, but I think we should also remember that we might also be only
one or two pay checks away from being in a similar situation before we scapegoat them.
And if the likes of Brown, Mandelson, Leighton and Crozier have their way, a lot of postal
workers might be joining the ranks of the long term unemployed in the coming years.

Well I can honestly say that none of the people on the council estates near our office were ever miners/steelworkers etc. They're just lazy crackheads.

a) they're too young to be in the aforementioned professions and
b) they don't really know where they are if you ask them anything.

My uncles were both coal miners, neither of them turned into the dregs of society.
Does this rag smell of chloroform to you?

I'm not saying that the people referred to were actually miners etc.
But if those jobs were still there they would most likely be in those type of jobs.
The areas devastated by the Thatcher Government, and since largely ignored
by New Labour have produced generational long term unemployment leading
to hopelessness, drink and drug problems, crime and antisocial behaviour.

It only works as long as people are working and paying into it, if everybody got the same idea and went on benefits,it will soon collapse like a House of Cards, these things need paying for (our taxes), the Benefit recipients will need to do something in return for their Benefit, i.e. "work in kind" such as Community cleaning, tidying up parks, picking up rubbish, basic wood working, repairs etc they will get the same 4 weeks a year off for Holidays, Benefit will still continue to be paid. that way they won't get something for nothing and realise it must be earned, if they refuse = no Benefits

if I was on Benefit, I would use the time to go to the Gym and get fit, go to College for Qualifications, go for Cultural day trips to National Trusts and English Heritage Propeties, Art Galleries and Libraries, I am not likely to go for the nearest Pint and Drug myself up to my eyeballs and hit some Granny for a few Quid.

I think it is a poor excuse to use Benefit lifestyles for Criminal and anti Social behavior, they were just badly brought up and the Dole lifestyles made it worse by giving them time on their hand to do more of it, you can take somebody out of a Slum but you can't take the Slum out of them, some people are just like that, regardless of lifetyles.

Totally agree NW. I have spent time unemployed in the past.I didnt blame Thatcher :Boo hoo! or sit on my arse feeling sorry for myself. :so there I took a job, cleaning in the local barracks, till my RM application was processed.£160 take home, just to put some food on the table.

mine is a mixture of terraced or long driveways a couple of shops and buisnesess
not that i get to do it very often.............move all the time cos they wont pay to train any one.
on mine once this week
3 days last week
4 days on it next week.....since i signed for it 6 months ago apart from x mas i have only done 3 weeks on it.
if i complain, they say i have got to move as we are flexible now....but it is always the same people who get moved.
funny how everyone got the payment but not all change
