:nana Again. It is no good the Unions saying do not use cars, if they are not prepared to make sure that
there are measures in place to to make it possible for us not to use them----Every time we have tried it the 'Union Way'
it has been a complete disaster, and the only people who suffer are the workers, not Royal Mail.

It is quite clear from previous posts that the concept of job and finish still holds firm in the minds of some, and the fact that this no longer exists is not an easy one to stomach. The ramifications of their actions has been pointed out but the carrot was to tempting.

The thing with the carrot and the stick is that the donkey needs to dismount the jockey holding the stick, trample them, thus leaving a carrot on the floor with a piece of string tied to it.

perhaps local reps should be looking at giving those who use their car bigger deliveries, as the equalisation of walks mean we are or should be out there for an equall amount of time. Now assuming we walk at the same speed, i am ready to go but my driver isn't, or i pedal out there taking 2 or 3 times as long as one who uses their car, and i have to wait for bags to be dropped off to me, this is all time those in their cars are potentially delivering mail. Therefore they may complete an up to an hour or more before me so in the interests of fairness they should get the extra work to equalise their duty with mine.
Confused... You won't be, after the next episode of. SOAP

:nana That is the problem, all walks are not equal, and never have been---I have seen many people whe were
rabid anti. car users for years, now using. their cars...perhaps if the unions made sure that ALL there members
get taken out on time, get their pouches dropped off in time--and most importantly of all. make sure the walks are
as equal as possible.folks will have no need to use them---

It's not actually their job to do. It is the DOM and line managers job to do.
The local and regional reps can, and do, work with management to help get the above is done in a fair and just way, but it is management's responsibility to ensure the job is done properly.
Just spilt stain-remover down my shirt. Now how do I get that out?

:nana Nobody is saying it is their job to do it, Just that they should support the workers when they have been left waiting day after day for lifts out ,back etc.because there are not enough vans, it'is no good unions not backing up members who have told the bosses they may be cutting off because they have waited an hour to get taken out, or been left frozen and soaked to the skin for another hour waiting on bags etc(What about health and safety then?)
When you go to unions for support in cutting off etc, the normal response is it's your problem mate!!!!

As others have already said: It's not advisable to use your own vehicle. But if you DO decide to use it. Bear in mind that unless RM perform a risk assessment on your particular model of Car (or provide you with a copy of one they did on an identical car elsewhere). If you get hurt loading/unloading it, you won't be able to claim any compensation.

Also, they MUST perform periodic safety tests on your Car, to ensure that it's properly maintained, and in a safe condition to use. Otherwise, you could end up with invalid Insurance, and a lot of trouble from HSE, should you ever have an accident. There are very strict rules for this type of thing. But they aren't always observed by DOMs, because the checks cost money.

What happens if your car breaks down on the way to your delivery ?
apart from informing your office of your misfortune what happens ?
I mean, its not RM's responsiblity to keep it on the road, its yours or mine or whoever.
If you used an RM vehicle they send someone out and you carry on delivering, does the same apply ? Are or would you be expected to leave your car and deal with it later ?

Again, it is worth checking with your own office what the rules are.

Sounds like your rep needs a kick up the jacksy. Perhaps you could stand for rep yourself. If he/she is that unhelpful you should get the vote OK.

I think you are right, but I think it should be a combination of the postie and the computer system. After all put garbage in a computer you get garbage out. Let the postie correct the computers misunderstanding of the time it takes to cross in busy traffic or to climb stairs when you are getting tired, surley the walk that comes out has to be a lot more realistic.

it's not the unions problem to get you out to your walk but have the courage or indeed the conviction to do it yourself i did yes it might be a tad awkward at first until the dim dum realises that you intend to carry on without your car not just empty threats for a few odd days.

no walks aren't equal some down to terrain but with senority you one day will have the chance of perhaps the ''lighter'' job thats of course if you stop using your car and then the jobs will not grow in size but with the useage of cars on delivery your job will grow in size because the managers will see that as time they can utilize for there bonus figgures to be swollen but unfortunatly you'll not get a pat on the back from him although you might have paid for his carribean holiday

Great to see RMC doing its bit for the environment in recycling old threads. As has been stated many times, lots DO use their own cars, particularly where getting home can be a big problem. I've always cycled (except up hills) but each to their own.
