I don't see how that can be abandonment of service as conatct has been made.

The current absence from work is now seen as 'Sick with no pay' and will no doubt trigger stage warnings shortly.
Why sick with no pay?

Unless he's been there for less than a year or has been of for over a year he should be getting sick pay. :hmmmm
