They should change whatever legislation is blocking it and charge these other so called "Mail Companies" the going rate. :hmmmm

I believe when we originally lost the monopoly we were forced to give competitors a cheap deal on delivering THEIR mail, to enable a competitive market (correct me if I'm wrong)

Surely that cheap deal should have had an end date, and we should be able to charge them the going rate? :cuppa

What does the CWU's...'We will not accept these changes', 'we will not accept this and that' comments mean. Are they just words? How much power does the CWU actually have. It's all good and well saying you won't accept things, but Royal Mail are going ahead with the things you don't agree with. So where's your power?

-Compulsory redundancies are happening already or have happened?

-They are employing people on lower pay and terms and conditions already?

-They have replaced 12,000+ staff with agency workers they are going to keep.

At what point does the CWU prevent more changes happening? Where does the line get drawn?

Does Royal Mail want rid of letters totally?

Is it possible the government may have to take on letters and the USO?

How likely is it that Royal Mail will keep letters but manage to get the government to allow them to reduce the service? and if the government doesn't reduce the service what are the chances Royal Mail will not abide by the USO and just do their own thing?
When they say this, they mean is there is no way they can be part of a deal that will be put to the members, as they're unacceptable changes and to the detriment of the members. Before people get upset and demand that we should be allowed to vote on every unacceptable thing RM throws out, it's worth remembering we did that when we were balloted. Dave and Andy are representing us, and we elected them. Also, could you imagine the amount of bile RM would be throwing at us to vote for? The bar would be touching the floor, and it would be non-stop.

Our power is in withdrawing our labour. That is the only power we have. Contrary to what a lot of people say, it's a massive threat to CEO's, as it is a massive power which is very effective. There has been a massive effort to quash unions over the past 4 or so decades, in both the UK and the US, using legislation. As a result, wages have stagnated and inequality has exploded. So the power the union has is really down to how tall we all stand.

The union can't just say to RM that isn't happening, now stop it. All they can do is to continue pressure on the employer, with IA, until a compromise is hopefully met.

At the minute everyone seems to think Christmas is the endgame. I've never thought this, as it's a short term period of chaos anyway. Long term disruption is the only thing that'll make this CEO be forced to eventually address the demands, in some way. The CEO does not have an unlimited amount of freedom to destroy the business. The board aren't saying "Destroy this union, even if you have to destroy the entire business." How could they possible allow that? No one seems to think for a moment that ST may be saying, "I was expecting them to have given up by now."

I think it's pretty likely they don't want the letters or the USO, I don't think the government want it either. This could mean they're likely to alter it, or they're gonna leave the thorn in RM's side. No one knows in all honesty, tho.

The other questions u listed, the answer is well no one knows is the answer. It's just opinions. You're gonna get people who are full of optimism, people who are full of rage and anger, people who have given up, and people trying to make u feel its hopelesson purpose, all telling you different things.

If something is worth having, it's worth fighting for, as they say. And, the only way we can do that is together, and taking away the only thing of any value to the employer, our labour.

Stuart McDonald wrote to the Dave Ward on Sunday night and within that letter he asked what are the things if Royal Mail agreed would stand down the strikes.

The PE agreed 5 issues would need to be agreed for the strikes to be stood down to allow further talks to conclude an agreement.

Stuart McDonald responded yesterday afternoon and he had reduced the five points to four and it fell far short of what we would agreed and PE rejected it unanimously.
Pointless post if can’t name the 5 issues.

I was on the picket line this morning and unfortunately at my DO (which has never been particularly Militant) Posties have started drifting back to work. :thumbdown TBH most of them have supported the Strikes so far, but they are feeling the finacial presssures.

As you've said, "If something is worth having, it's worth fighting for" but I often wonder if some of my colleagues share that view? And I really do wonder what they would be willing to stand up and fight for? :cuppa

Totally agree Halfhappy, in my eyes we're currently winning the battle, the longer we resist their changes, the weaker Thompson becomes. He thought it would be pretty much done and dusted by now with the path clear for the full takeover. Wrong, we haven't budged and we have to carry on with our efforts to resist their vision of what the job should look like, however long that takes. :thumbup

I heard Dave Ward being interviewed by a very poorly informed chap this morning.
Dave was brilliant, called him out on each and every point. Even advised him to do a bit of research rather that spout the royal mail line.
He looked thoroughly peed off at being asked inane questions by the interviewer, but remained calm and eloquent.
Well done Dave.

It's the same questions every time.

'oh - you want more pay - you are greedy'....

'oh - you are ruining xmas for the people'.... what about Royal Mail who haven't offered anything remotely acceptable.

It makes these reporters sound dumb.

I assume you are talking about the GB news guys who claimed we wanted a 10%+ pay rise. Where did he pluck that information from? I think most of us would accept 8% and X amount of change right now.

Our manager said we could come in on Sunday and clear some of the backlog from our rounds if we wanted to. Dangled the carrot of better rate of pay etc.. Which was kind of him. Needless to say with such a great offer I will be spending the day at home with my grandchildren

If we don't stand firmly on our ground, our post. That's what we are Postmen/Post Women . Given a duty to to deliver paid for messages, without interference or disruption from one party to another.

What we do is important.

Should we report our CEO to the police for impeding the mail . ?

How will they get on when RM come for ALL allowances? My gut feeling is that it's not if it'll happen, more when it'll happen
