Anyone remember when all the hundreds of extra vans arrived last year? I'm wondering if they were on hire just for a year and RM were required to return them all

Message from Achim Dunnwald: Update on van hiring process – and two new additional options
Following our communication over the weekend, we have received requests vehicles from all across the country. We are working hard with our hire partners to get you the vans you’ve requested, and we will get these to you as soon as we can.
One of the challenges is that, in some cases, vans at local branch offices that appear to be available are not, as they are controlled at a group level. As such, we have introduced some additional options to secure additional vans into our network.
Update on local hiring process previously set out
As set out on Sunday, there is a four step process to hiring vans from local providers. You can access the process here and the information sheet you need to fill in here.
We have further refined the local process so there are two ways that these vans will be hired:
Nexus Local: Where the local hire company you have identified is within the network of Nexus (our national vehicle broker), the fleet team or Nexus will contact you to regarding collection or delivery.
Local Independents: If the local hire company is not in the Nexus network, the Leeds call centre will call you when the deals have been done. This will mostly be the case for small and local companies who manage their own stock.
Two new options for hiring vans
In addition, we have also approved two new routes to secure additional vans into the network:
Central Stock: We are also ordering quantities of stock centrally from Enterprise and from large regional and national hire companies through Nexus. We will match available stock centrally to delivery offices within a 50 mile radius. If we have secured central stock for your DO, you will hear from Nexus or Enterprise directly so that you can arrange a collection.
Direct hire and reimbursement: One additional option is for you to deal directly with the Local Independents using your own credit card and for Royal Mail to reimburse you as soon as possible. To protect you in these circumstances, some rules apply:
sign the contract in the name of Royal Mail Limited and not your own name (otherwise you are liable under the terms and conditions)
do not sign up for a period beyond 25 December 2021
try to avoid signing up to local insurance offered as the vehicle will be protected under the general Royal Mail insurance policies
inform the Leeds Call Centre that you have done the deal so that we don’t duplicate, we have a record and we can reimburse you
you must not do deals with hirers where you have personal relationships (e.g. family or close friends).
Insurance
If you need assistance with any query about insurance, please contact martin.n.williams@royalmail.com or paul.sedgwick@royalmail.com. Vehicles will be covered by Royal Mail’s insurance policies and a copy of the certificate can be obtained from the fleet team. However, in some instances a hire company may stipulate local insurance must be paid for. This is acceptable in those circumstances.
Thank you.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

It seems this new hire van plan malarkey isn't going so well. See all the comments from disgruntled managers over on Workplace in this thread:

Achim Dunnwald
*** Van usage ***
Colleagues, a lot of activity regarding delivery vans over the last few days. I believe we are getting ourselves in a better position.
We have not just asked the DOMs to place their requests, but also to look how the vans on hand could be best and efficiently used. Data from our Trimble system for week 35 and 36 tell us the following (sample covers just under 34k vehicles, or 87% of our red delivery fleet):
563 vans (1.7%) are used up to 2 hours per day.
1,129 vans (3.3%) are used up to 3 hours per day.
2,348 vans (7%) are used up to 4 hours per day.
7,810 vans (23%) are used up to 5 hours per day.
A different cut of the data reveals that 1,834 vans (5.4%) are not moved after 1pm, and 9,581 vans (23%) are not moved after 2pm.
So perhaps, part of the van shortage could well be addressed by better utilising of our fleet, rather than adding more vans.

You couldn't make this s**t up.
But but but.... the data says.... posties should be utilising the vans 24 hours a day. While I'm watching bargain hunt the lackies should be starting a backshift in the dark while their family are having their tea.

Lies, damn lies and statistics.

Quick, call in the mass ranks of invisible posties to drive these vans,
Beyond belief the amount of bollocks that comes out of the top level of this once decent company. And the stunning silence from Terry Bullshitter while members of his union are slagged off at every opportunity,
How about the percentage the workload has gone up, and the percentage of duties/parcels that haven't been delivered due to a lack of staff.

failing the workforce, failing the public and deliberately failing mail on a daily basis for too many years.

So 28% of vans aren't used after 2pm whilst the other 72% are still out on delivery helping out an incredibly ungrateful management

I challenge anyone to find one van in our place at 2.10pm! What time do these jokers think we finish at this time of year? Clueless.
