Re: Half mast
You do love the overly-dramatic response, but then again you are the poster who brought up Nazi flags etc in a thread about Bristol MC and it's flag at half-mast.

Re: Half mast
Is that a a serious question?
There are literally thousands of examples out there from far right nut jobs to football fans to religious bigots but I was thinking more of the military significance of raising your flag over a subjugated nation, something the UK has done with the Union Flag for hundreds of years. Do you think the locals may have thought that the UK may just be an "evil regime"?

Re: Half mast
I had a hunch that in reality what you really wanted was to let us all in on your thoughts on the "evils of the British Empire" .
Bit of a stretch from Bristol MC though.

Re: Half mast
Isn't that the point though.
Not all people see the Union Flag in the same way you do.
Your statement...
....is based on your own your own personal view and very privileged place in the debate. You've never had your country invaded by an army carrying it before them or your friends and family murdered, abused or harassed by people waving it.There are no "good or bad" morality judgements to be made about it.
The very least you could do while "respecting" it is acknowledge what it means to those that have.

Britain was invaded a few times during medieval times, they would have had flags back thenWoody Guthrie wrote: ↑18 Apr 2021, 02:19You've never had your country invaded by an army carrying it before

Funny that former "subjugated" nations still retain the Union Flag in top left canton of their own flag even Hawaii has a Union Flag in its colours even as an independent "unsubjugated" nation before being forcibly incorporated into the American Empire

And the very least you can do is to not make statements or judgement calls on people's history and attitudes when you know absolutely nothing about them.Woody Guthrie wrote: ↑18 Apr 2021, 02:19You've never had your country invaded by an army carrying it before them or your friends and family murdered, abused or harassed by people waving it.

My point still stands; Bristol MC (or any other building in the GB) flying the Union Flag doesn't require any sort of retrospective morality debate on historical actions and connotations.
"Family murdered, abused et cetc" is something for the historians to debate rather than the POC at Bristol.

Leave history in the past eh?"Family murdered, abused et cetc" is something for the historians to debate rather than the POC at Bristol.
But we don't do we?
Only the ugly parts.
The rest , the fake, cleaned up jingoistic version guys like you and NW revel in is force fed to the nation ad nauseum.
So the rest of us are constantly reminded.
History is indeed written by the victors as the fat man with the cigar apparently said.

Re: Half mast
Godwin's law relates to the introduction of a completely unrelated comparison.
It's not really relevant if someone states that there are no "good or bad" morality judgements that can be made about a national flag is it?
