Do the job because of the reason you started.. Hopefully to help the fellow workers in receiving rights and keeping them!!!

U say your gonna ask em to put up or shut up!!! It must of come to a point where your being challenged!!! Hopefully again just your judgement n not your morals??? As You come across as a good man!!! Straight up n doing a job that many wouldnt.... I have my doubts if i could do it!! I wouldnt REP for some people!!! We all know the type as we all have em in every office!! The early birds the car users the job cutters and do feck all n spout the most!! Senior men a lot of em!!! Now i see the job going to the dogs in my time but i only want what is best for now and try and keep the future in sight!! Keep on mate.. Keep on doing the good.. Keep up the good fight!!!

Started as rep 14/15 years ago in my home DO, small rural unit. BEST JOB I've ever done, did Induction with J.Keggie(who?) and had best Branch in Country (personal bias) behind me[North Lancs and Cumbria]. Despite this I've fallen out with most of my colleagues over the years for a variety of reasons:-

1) Repicks/Revisions - Done Right your best mate won't speak to you and DOM will tell everyone it's your fault!
2) Conduct - 'Everyone knows he/she is guilty' - No matter what the offence/non-offfence
3) Too cosy with Manager- even if you still have Block hours at Xmas/Election Time.
4) You're on an 'easy' duty.

.......................and the rest.

Just once in a while, and this is very rare so treasure it, someone will turn to you and say "if it wasn't for you we'd really be in the s**t!"

IF THE MEMBERS SAY THIS ONCE EVERY THREE YEARS..............you're doing fine!

GOOD POST PAD. I HAD AN EPISODE LAST YEAR WHEN WE HAD FUNDING FOR 10 DROP BOXES. COS THE DUTY I DO IS IN A RUN DOWN COUNCIL ESTATE, THERE WAS NO SECURE DROP POINTS. THIS BEING THE CASE, MY DUTY WAS ALLOCATED ONE. I TOOK A LOT OF FLAK FROM A FEW INDIVIDUALS INCLUDING A MEMBER WHO'S DUTY WAS ALLOCATED A BOX. I NEARLY GAVE UP AS A REP. SINCE THEN I'VE PUT MY NECK ON THE LINE ON A FEW OCCASIONS AGAINST A BULLY OF A MANAGER. LETS JUST SAY THE MEMBERS APPRECIATE ME A LOT MORE AND THE MANAGER THINKS TWICE BEFORE TRYING ANYTHING THAT WILL USPET THE RUNNING OF THE D.O
YOU'RE ALWAYS GONNA GET IT FROM SOME QUARTER, JUST GRIN AND BARE IT.

And, you never get anywhere because your always pissing the management off!!

But I have to agree with Pad, now and again you get a genuine pat on the back,
That makes you feel good for 10 min's
Then you look forward for the next 3/5 years for the next one!!!

Have your say results concerning "management and union works well together" makes me laugh every time.

If the office agrees with this statement you're a brown nose, If the office disagrees with this statement you're no good for the industrial reations of the office.

As for the pat on the back, I saved a number of members jobs and they are so relieved a thank you is never uttered. A week or two later you are again being criticised for not doing anything?

That score is always low for me. Nothing is ever done though. It would be helpfull to know who is at fault and why. makes the question pointless really.

I am unit rep in a small office in dorset,so far its been ok,but I know that some ppl have mixed feelings about me, so I stick to the same hard duty as before and have meetings with our dom when I finish so nobody can say I am after a easy ride. I also make sure I tell the members everything that is going on, as far as I can see ie I am just eyes and ears of the members(a mouthpiece some would say a big one)

Thats the problem with the membership quick to moan but slow to put their name forward to stand as rep. Would they rather have no rep at all?

I'm a rep for customer services. Sometimes it's like banging your head against the wall, other times it's the best volunteer job in the world. But some members would try the patience of a saint.

One once asked me if she could have Urgent Domestic Distress leave due to her hamster being ill. Laughing, I said, "Yeah, try it out!" The silly beggar went up to our RSM (equivalent of DOM) and said that I'd said she could. Next thing I know I'm being dragged into an office by the RSM. Between bouts of me laughing my head off and the RSM trying to bollock me, I managed to get away with it.

Recently the same RSM has reported me to my area rep for being aggressive. Her reasons: I dared to fold my arms when talking to her and that an email I sent out asking people to calm down over a silly, trivial thing was deemed "demanding solidarity". LMAO. Of course, the area rep and sub area rep just ignored her.

When I was a rep on a factory management usually were a little bit harder. I once had a chair thrown at me by one of them for goodness' sake! Granted, I had called him a lying c**t at the time. lol

As fopr the 18 month debate. Yup it sounds far too long to me.
But then (devils advocate hat on) it could in some cases, where the harrasment is particularly severe, take the individual that long to recover some self worth & confidence to raise the issue.

We have been working for outright bullies for quite some time now, & I susspect we're about to find out just how big a bully they are
