It may be true that because of the the tremendous pressures of being CEO that I occasionally have a day or two off. Last Christmas, I took just two weeks holiday during the peak period, which I think you'll agree was a huge sacrifice on my part and something that you should rightly applaud, especially as I took the time out of my busy schedule to wish you all a merry Christmas and happy new year on Workplace before I went.

Now if you'd all worked just a little bit harder during last year's peak, we could have paid out even bigger dividends and I'd have received an even bigger bonus, which I'm sure you'll agree is tremendous recognition for your efforts. But we can do better! And we need to! I'm not long back from a bit of an extended weekend break and I can see on my return that we're in real trouble. So what i'd like you all to do is resolve to go the extra mile over the next few months. I'll be on holiday for a few weeks in August, of course (as I suppose many of you will be too!), but you need to remember that the company needs you to really knuckle down and EARN that 2% pay rise that we gave you despite the CWU's objections (I can't believe a union would oppose a pay rise!).

Rest assured that in November when you're struggling around your rounds at 5.30pm in the dark and lashing rain, I'll be raising a glass to you and admiring your commitment to deliver - it's what we need for my lifestyle to remain viable, and I hope I can count on you all to make some small sacrifices to allow this to happen.

And think how much you'll save on gas and electricity if you're out working in the winter evenings rather than sitting bored at home! There's no need to thank me, I've always your best interests at heart.

He has mentioned previously that he does 'bits' in his office at home on Sundays. Please bare in mind he also works from home a couple of days a week anyway as it's a long way to work and back, his words, not my wind up.

On a recent Q&A on the subject regarding 'senior management' working on a Sunday Jenny 'Miss unfortunately' Hall - Director of Corporate Affairs did point out that on some occasions she had to 'do stuff' on the odd Sunday due to the press. However, she did not say that she 'went in' on a Sunday or elaborate further about other 'senior managers'.
