Is a second ballot a mistake?

Post by mattick »

I’m just throwing this question out there to see what other members opinions are on this?

Just for context; I’m pro-union and fully support the union if they decide to take industrial action. I’m also going to toe the line and get as many members to vote yes for this second ballot for industrial action.

But in my opinion, we have already achieved the result we needed with the 1st ballot. A 77% turnout for a political vote is as good as it gets.

A lot of people are apolitical, and I think will be even more so when it’s comes to voting a 2nd time when they have the shared mindset that the job is already done.

A poor turnout and a potential lower yes vote I think could seriously undermine the 1st ballot. It also runs the risk of emboldening Simon Thompson confidence of fighting the union.

I’m no expert but aren’t they doing it because if Royal Mail take executive action on the changes they want to make, like they did with the 2% pay increase, the union would have no mandate for strike action because the first ballot was very specifically about pay?

What is the difference between the RMT ballot and ours . Their issues include cost of living increase, as well as terms and condition attacks as well as redundancies. I am not sure whether they needed 2 ballots, yet we need to?

Because we were initially only balloted on a pay increase which was a straight forward fight but RM started executive action and forced a 2% pay rise which wasn't agreed then started threatening all the ridiculous terms a conditions so the union have to make the next move to have some sort of protection legally I would assume hence the second ballot on t&c's,its just a game of chess.

You're being harsh there, but I agree about the chess bit. Any strike action is looking likely to drag on until we hit the busy Nov/Dec period.
