You don't need to be on the sick long term to be Ill Health Retired. As far as I know you never have. No-one in my office has been on the sick for twelve months before getting IHR.

OH make the decision about whether you're fit to work for RM or not. Can't see RM deciding not to pay you off if the health provider has stated you're not fit for work.

As regards the OPs question. It depends. If you've already had consultations with OH and they have consultants reports etc, then it won't take long. In my case I had had no contact with them so it took time to contact consultants and GPs and all told took about 6-7 weeks.

97gaz is right,depends on your cause of IHR .If its mental health issues then it's a lengthy process because mental health can improve in time.

It took 6 months for me but it would have been a lot sooner if the idiot Doctor from Optima health hadn't been a clueless clown, my condition is pancreatic cancer and to be fair to royal mail my boss recommended me for IHR within a couple of weeks of my diagnosis but the clown I was dealing with at Optima was more concerned with the benefits I would receive from RM than he was with my condition, I put up with this fool for 5 months before finally firing off a not so nicely worded email to Optima, 3 days after sending the email Dr Clown rang me with a total change of attitude and recommended me for IHR in hindsight the dumb Doctor did me a favour as I got the 6 months of full pay due to his stalling, I got a total payment of £32,000 before tax and £28,900 after tax you only get taxed on the PILON part of the pay out I also keep the death in service benefit that royal mail offers for the next 3 years, so all in all not to bad, my job was as a LGV Driver so that is what the PILON part of my payout is based on.

Sorry can't point you straight to it but it's one of the rumoured changes mentioned recently along with all the other attacks on our terms and conditions, have a good think about it and if it's what you want tell the boss you'd like him to put the wheels in motion.

Going by experience of postie's taking it at our place if oh have recommended it then it can happen really quickly, literally once it's agreed you're talking next week you'll be gone with the payout in your final wage.
