Paying someone for their walk!

Post by Jamespostman »

I am currently doing a walk which I really enjoy (the usual postie is off sick). Is it unheard of to offer someone a cash incentive to swap rounds? I’m currently a reserve on a 26.5hr contract and might ask if they’d like to be a reserve and give up their round.

Thoughts?

Probably a few "rules" being broken, apart from the fact that not many people would give up a signed for duty to become a reserve. If they did give up their duty, it would have to be advertised as being available. Generally speaking, the most senior person to apply would get the duty.

Unlikely that someone on a regular duty that they will know inside out, with regular days off that they can plan around will swap to anytime/anywhere/anyplace as a reserve!

That aside, if what you suggest was to happen just imagine the queue of whingers running to the rep and DOM to protest!

He doesn’t “own” the Walk

And there would be nothing stopping someone signing for it in a resign given I assume you have low seniority
If you tolerate this, then your paid break will be next

It sounds like a bad idea. The only time you pay someone to do a duty for u is if u need the day off and you can get them to cover it. That being said I have not heard of it happening for a long time now so it’s probably not the done thing anymore.

Any financial incentive in return for advantage could be considered bribery.
From the code of business standards.
Royal Mail Group has a zero tolerance policy on bribery. Therefore:

You must never promise, offer or give a bribe You must never request or accept a bribe

If you become aware of any knowledge or suspicion of bribery, you should report it as soon as reasonably possible to your manager or the Speak Up line

You will not suffer demotion, penalty or other adverse consequences for refusing to pay or receive bribes

That still happens at our office, it’s virtually impossible to get a lieu day authorised so we just cut out the middle man.

Used to pay the docket kings to do the odd bag for me on a Saturday morning, back in the day when I used to go to away matches regularly

Pre-park & loopy,£20 would see me get a row or two taken off & an 8am finish at the latest.

Would be on the train at 9am,cracking open my first can :chuckle

I’d be careful - even if it was somehow above board, you could easily find yourself continuing to be moved as a ‘reasonable request’ and so you’d be out of pocket and back at square one.
The day is gonna come when we’re all gonna have to testify.

EXACTLY! You only deliver on behalf of Royal Mail, they own the walks and can ultimately decide what happens with them, and who. "Operational Needs" would be their take.

Do you want them to lose hours as well? unless the other person was desperate to do less days I couldn't see any reason to do the swap.
