Wanting to quit already after day two

Post by Bearcat@76 »

↑Hi all, hope you can help so I received a call from RM recruitment confirming that I had the job as a postie with driving 30hr contract. I was over the moon when they told me, they gave me my start date which was last Tuesday received an email to be at depot for 06:00, turned up nobody there apart from early starts and RM HGV driver unloading, he said that there was no management in yet fortunately there was a postie that was in early who was a workplace coach showed me around and apologised, he was really nice. Later on I was introduced to another workplace coach who seemed okay but started to come across as if the training duty was an inconvenience to him. He started to show me how to file letters in the frame but very briefly, I had a hello how are you we will have a chat at some point from one of the managers and that was it for the day. So we eventually went out on of the loops and was shown how to deliver post and how to use a PDA, went on a second loop and I was onmy own delivering letters which I enjoyed. The second day I was basically on my own I was told to come in for 8:00 am I arrived and found that half the frame had been completed, apparently Wednesday's are really busy so could that be the reason. Had that chat with management about 20 mins into my shift all appears fine they said you will make loads of mistakes but stick at it you will do well. So we went out on delivery I was issued with a PDA with very little training, grabbed the parcels and off I went, so it was a day of a bit of rain and sun which was great. I have seen from other posts on here I need to stick at it which is fair enough, but I cannot help the feeling that something is not right and I don't want to go back. Its not been a pleasant experience so far my workplace coach is acting like training me is an inconvenience leaving me on the frame often for ten fifteen mins and sometimes I get short answers when asking questions. I'm back in tomorrow and I'm dreading it I'm only new to the job and except making mistakes is part of the process but I want to be taught correctly so I don't make so many. Hope you can help

Work place coaches for the most part are idle bastards who just fancied an extra £30+ a week for doing nothing. Since the time this person has taken their pieces of silver their amount of work has increased and they're feeling the pressure and resent taking the time to train you (which isn't a hard task let's face it). Have a word with your union rep first and tell them the coach is being a jerk off. You could pull the coach up about their manner, but if you're not sure of the consequences, the rep or line manager is the way to go. The job is hard enough without your work mates making things worse. Stick it out, you'll be away from work-shy coach before you know it. Probably find out from others they're an arsehole full-time.

It's a tough one, it's great you want to be taught properly, but at the same time if they can't be bothered, then why should you. I certainly wouldn't worry about it, but that's my attitude towards things. If anything, them not teaching you should mean it's less of a worry for you , whereas if they did show you absolutely everything then they could easily start taking the piss and be like "oh we taught you so you should be amazing bla bla bla".

For me, definitely don't worry about anything as if they haven't taught you properly it's their own fault and not yours,. If you feel you like the job stick with it and just learn as you go along, if they ever moan ask them what training did you receive

So handed in my notice this morning and explained to a manager it was not for me, he said what could we have done better, so I explained that i feel that the first couple of days could have been better. also explained that the PDA training could have been explained in more detail and I shouldn't have been put on a loop with everything post/parcels PDA on day two, I know I made mistakes with the PDA etc on my own, but I was told you can make as many mistakes as you like for six weeks that's to be expected for new starters. I feel very frustrated that all I wanted was to be trained properly, not been introduced to the union rep. Maybe in hindsight I have had a lucky escape

I agree your induction was abysmal and is pretty typical for Royal Mail.
Imn sorry that you have wasted your time applying etc.
But believe me in the long term it will be for the best.
The job is getting worse year in year out.
In my opinion you've had a lucky escape.
I wish you all the best for the future

This is a really sad indictment of Royal Mail and the union. We all know the work place coach roles in the majority of offices are not fit for purpose. In my experience these roles are filled by the lazy arse lickers that are only concerned about themselves and picking up an extra few quid , they basically do nothing all year round to justify earning that money and when they have something to do they act like this .In my opinion the union cause more problems than they solve and I say that with over 30 years experience.

This sounds like our workplace coach, he moans & groans about having a new starter with him, then bad mouths to other posties, it’s like having a second gaffa on the job when he’s around, running into the office tickle tackling. The grass.

I see you have left but I would still contact HR Services 0345 6060 603 & tell your story, pity these type of posts do not turn up in the Courier

When I started in 1991 we went to Postie school for the 1st 8days watching videos and learning the sorting. On the Thursday of the 2nd week we reported to our office and got shadowed somebody for the rest of the week on the walk we were going to do for the next 6-8 weeks and even then the person we shadowed probably just used us an assistant to get the walk done faster. It all changed in 94/95 when they got rid of the Postie schools and you reported to the office in day one like now which I still believe was a very big mistake. But its always hard for the 1st couple of weeks but in time and with help you will find your feet even thru the job is alot harder then it was when I started Back in 91 pre 2004 we did 2 deliveries shorter delivery spans basically out for 3 hrs break at the office and then a sort and prep and out for a 2nd delivery. Today out for 4-5hrs 20mins break before you go out and the other 20mins break out on delivery. If you are having probs don't be afraid to ask for help also if you have one at the DO get to know ur Union Rep and there are some good managers out there I will admit not all are.
The only piece of advice I will give is take your time and try not to feel the pressure you will get there

We must be in the same office!

How the hell our WPC gets away with what he does is quite astonishing

“If they’re bills I don’t want ‘em!”

“What’s she been ordering now?”
