Scrap the dividend, negotiate a pay deal, keep the allowances
The dividend should be the first thing to go. It can be reinstated when times are better. Are the union actively saying this ?
Allowances for many, many staff are essential. They / We work very unsociable hours which can create challenging personal and family situations.
Instead of threatening to cut allowances, scrap the dividend.
Inflation is nuts right now. £100 to fill some of our cars that many people require just to get to work and back.
This shouldn't even be a debate. Wage increases always need to keep up with inflation. It's just fair, honest & decent.
If scrapping the dividend in itself fails to award a fair and decent pay deal at least in line with inflation, sell GLS too and scrap the dividend to boot.

Re: Scrap the dividend, negotiate a pay deal, keep the allowances
Scrapping the dividend will tank the share price.
This will make us sitting ducks for a takeover.
This will probably lead to a GLS sell off (they are responsible for a good chunk of the profits).
This would probably lead to a radical reshaping of the business and our terms and conditions.
It's a big call to make.

Re: Scrap the dividend, negotiate a pay deal, keep the allowances
The point I'm making is that Royal Mail are already threatening a radical overhaul of our terms and conditions.
The share price is already below IPO price. The share price should not be the workers concern. It could crash & burn regardless, but Royal Mail can always go back to the markets to raise more cash, which is after all the purpose of being a floated company anyway. Their dividends and share buy backs, when confronted with such headwinds as costly modernisation & automation, lockdowns, inflation, energy crisis etc appears to me to be quite reckless with vast amounts of money.
We can't second guess what may happen if we argue a solid case for an in line inflation pay rise with no reduction in allowances or terms. Yet we do know if they get their way we will suffer - no second guessing needed.
We need to be clear that Royal Mail have plenty of options besides taking their bad decisions out on the workforce.

I'm not disagreeing with you but this is unfortunately where we are and the kind of thinking that will drive the Royal Mail board and to a certain extent the union as well.
The truth is we (the union) should have fought harder against privatisation because that's why we are where we are, a profitable company that refuses to compensate its staff properly because its priorities are its shareholders.

Can't turn the clock back Woody. We are where we are.
We need to be clear and united. Royal Mail have many options.
They either suck up the fact that all this years profits are going to the work force for a fair and decent pay deal, or we strike.
If the Royal Mail corporation don't want either of those things to happen, in lieu of passing their profits on to us they can instead either scrap the dividend temporary, sell GLS, or go back to the markets for more cash (or all 3).
It is Royal Mail who need to make the difficult decision, not the workforce to be in a compromised position when it comes to pay & t&c's.
The directors are paid eye watering amounts of money to deal with these situations.
They need to do the worrying, but we can't allow them to back us into a corner of being between a rock & a hard place.
They have options. We need to stand firm.

I'm a shareholder and make a decent amount through the dividend so it's a big NO from me.

We always do.We need to stand firm
We couldn't stand any firmer.
It's not us you need to worry about.
It's the negotiation team.
and those whispering in their ears.
and the PEC.
and the branches.

Re: Scrap the dividend, negotiate a pay deal, keep the allowances
I wouldn't brag too much about having lots of shares in a company that has lost 30% since January, the shorters are shorting and every financial analyst and his dog are screaming sell at the moment.
It's a brave investment I'll give you that but there's safer investments out there with higher dividends if investing in shares is your thing.

Unfortunately I reckon we're doomed, my DO has roughly 200 people, many new people that dont intend to stay long and arnt in the CWU,standing firm or United for them means nothing at all.some arnt even aware of the union as we dont have a rep,its a different world now RM is a private concern
