It depends the absence reason.

If you are off with stress due to management action then alternative arrangements need to be made such as a manager from another office doing the interview.

The same if your leg is in plaster going to a management request "Fit Club" at your place of employment would be unreasonable.

A discussion to make adjustments because of a disability would be reasonable yet a manager face to face for short absence again will be unreasonable

The Attendance agreement states the reason for an absence is normally discussed at the back to work meeting. Long term absence the agreement states a face to face should happen within 28 days.

The key being "Should""

But not having a face to face with no reasonable excuse can be seen as unreasonable by the employee, either at home or place of employment

It really does depend on the absence reason and how long the employee has been signed off work by their health care professional

Whenever dealing with management it is always advisable to inform your union rep and have them attend. As has been said elsewhere the reason for your absence plays a part on where any formal meetings to discuss your absence occur
