Unite/CMA outcome of consultative ballot, moving to ballot for IA

Unite/CMA recently held a consultative ballot on changes relating to Delivering for the Future. Following the result of this consultative ballot, Unite/CMA has informed Royal Mail of its intention to issue a formal ballot for industrial action. I want to take this opportunity to share with you what industrial action would mean for the business and the steps we might have to take to protect the company from additional costs and loss of revenue.

You, as managers, will know better than anyone, the risks that even the threat of industrial action poses to our business and the confidence of our customers.

We are unclear why Unite/CMA would plan to issue a formal ballot at this late stage when managers are already in their new roles, the new structure has already gone live, and many managers impacted by the programme have already left the organisation under voluntary redundancy.
Since November we have worked with Unite/CMA to deliver this change in a way that, we believe, will lead to better outcomes for our managers and our wider teams. As a reminder, the vast majority of managers will see an increase in earnings under the new structure, and those of our colleagues who have left the business did so voluntarily on generous terms.

Now is the time we need to focus on embedding the changes

At this stage, we wanted to be working closely with Unite/CMA to embed the changes we have introduced under Delivering for the Future. The agreements we have reached with Unite/CMA, and the partnership both sides committed to, provide an excellent platform to do this. This is where we should all put our energy.

Our managers are such a crucial part of the reinvention of Royal Mail. The changes we have made under Delivering for the Future – such as giving managers accountability for their teams and investing in more training and development – are an important next step in our wider transformation, and I have been really encouraged to hear from so many managers who have grasped this opportunity to lead their teams in a different way.

We are committed to working with all our managers at all levels to make the new structure and ways of working a success. The Regional Operations Directors have already grasped the initiative and are out and about seeing the positives first-hand and taking feedback on where there are aspects to be reviewed. Many of you have been sharing your experiences on Workplace and other forums which has been very welcome.

We all know this has been a major review. This has been a big ask and we thank you for all your efforts in this first week.
However, we will have to ensure the proposals remain affordable and take action to mitigate any lost revenue and additional costs that industrial action would impose on the business. As such, it is with great regret that I need to advise you that in the event of industrial action we will no longer be able to implement the concessions outlined in the Delivering for the Future Key Principles Agreement that we briefed you on last week.

For example, we would need to revert to National and London salary ranges and not the current Defined Area payments as outlined last week. Other recent concessions would also be affected.

We would strongly urge all impacted managers to consider carefully the implications of their voting decision. We need certainty as a business, and we also know that you need certainty as individuals. A vote for industrial action creates uncertainty and instability that will impact us all.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

What a great start to 2022 this is for Royal Mail.
Alienating managers & posties with a severe lack of respect and below par communications.
Lets be under no illusions here that RM plan to cut management overheads, cutting middle management, cutting the amount of COMs and trying to cut rest day cover managers for DO’s. This is all to save money, maximise profits and line the pockets of shareholders.
The biggest cost to the business is its people, and every change to terms and conditions is slowly eradicating this cost.

I hope they do strike - but id highly doubt they would especially en masse

Can’t beat a good bit of old fashioned blackmail to stop the strike.

Accountability. That just sounds like the buck stops here.
No real autonomy for shop-floor management theyre just a lower tier to prevent the top brass from catching any s**t.
Looks like the parasites are burrowing in for the long haul.

If the CMA do vote for a strike, it'll be interesting, when we have to cross their picket lines as they'll have to conduct code anyone who doesn't cross their picket lines

I am very disappointed in our managers.
They must know that the slightest hint of industrial action could harm the business.
Our customers will go elsewhere. We will all lose in the long run.
What are they thinking about? :wave
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

I've mentioned this before, the guys at the top really must think that they have a team of professional, competent, 100% company focused managers, unfortunately at DO level this is as far removed from reality as you can ever get.
