Update on CWU pay talks
As you’re probably aware, there were planned pay deal talks this week where we hoped to move the conversation forward and start discussing some of the detail of the changes we’re seeking. Disappointingly the CWU left those talks without engaging in a conversation on the change elements of our pay offer.
I want to update you and let you know that CWU has now opted to move the pay discussions into our agreed Dispute Resolution Process.
Dispute Resolution Process
This is a formal process as outlined in our Agenda for Growth Agreement and involves a period of intense talks lasting one month, unless both parties decide they need to extend that.
We’ve asked them to commit to a genuine conversation about the changes we need as well as pay. We put forward a proposal which aims to balance recognising the great work of our people, maintaining our industry-leading pay and benefits, at the same time ensuring Royal Mail can grow and remain competitive into the future. Getting this balance right is what creates job security for everyone in the long term.
Even the hint of industrial action is damaging for our business at a time of increasing economic uncertainty and intense competitive pressure. We’re continuing to see media and customer speculation about the impact of Royal Mail strike action and it only serves to damage us as a business – customers choose to use us and they can just as easily choose to take their business to our competitors if our service to them is uncertain.
Whilst we understand CWU may have rejected our initial offer, we’ve not yet had a chance to discuss any detail on our change proposals, so moving directly into dispute feels like we’re missing an opportunity to speed up getting to an agreement.
We’re committed to using the Dispute Resolution Process to reach agreement
The Dispute Resolution Process is there to help us to advance talks when there is an impasse, so we’re fully committed to doing all we can to use it to get to a resolution and we hope CWU are taking the same approach. It is our joint responsibility to find a way through and agree a deal quickly.
We know many people are feeling the impact of the rising cost of living now so we want to get a pay deal done in as short a time as possible. And we hope those discussions keep things moving and avoid the possibility of unnecessary and damaging industrial action.
As we’ve said already, we must agree a deal that sets us up for tomorrow, and not just today, taking into account the changes we need to grow the business. We must respond to changing customer demands – bigger parcels, more next day parcels, seven-day deliveries and a service that is better for the planet too. We must adapt to thrive as a business.
Starting pay talks for Parcelforce Worldwide employees
I also want to let you know we have now begun talks with CWU to agree a pay deal for our Parcelforce employees.
We’ll update Parcelforce Worldwide colleagues as soon as we can.
Scheduled talks for a pay offer for Fleet employees
Finally, we have also arranged to meet CWU later this week regarding a pay deal for our Fleet employees, and the relevant changes required as part of that offer. Again, we’ll update you as soon as we can.
We value the joint work we have done with CWU and we would like to continue that now to get a pay deal done quickly.
Keep checking Workplace for official updates on how talks are progressing.
Thank you,
Ricky McAulay
