Update on CWU pay talks

As you’re probably aware, there were planned pay deal talks this week where we hoped to move the conversation forward and start discussing some of the detail of the changes we’re seeking. Disappointingly the CWU left those talks without engaging in a conversation on the change elements of our pay offer.
I want to update you and let you know that CWU has now opted to move the pay discussions into our agreed Dispute Resolution Process.

Dispute Resolution Process

This is a formal process as outlined in our Agenda for Growth Agreement and involves a period of intense talks lasting one month, unless both parties decide they need to extend that.

We’ve asked them to commit to a genuine conversation about the changes we need as well as pay. We put forward a proposal which aims to balance recognising the great work of our people, maintaining our industry-leading pay and benefits, at the same time ensuring Royal Mail can grow and remain competitive into the future. Getting this balance right is what creates job security for everyone in the long term.

Even the hint of industrial action is damaging for our business at a time of increasing economic uncertainty and intense competitive pressure. We’re continuing to see media and customer speculation about the impact of Royal Mail strike action and it only serves to damage us as a business – customers choose to use us and they can just as easily choose to take their business to our competitors if our service to them is uncertain.

Whilst we understand CWU may have rejected our initial offer, we’ve not yet had a chance to discuss any detail on our change proposals, so moving directly into dispute feels like we’re missing an opportunity to speed up getting to an agreement.

We’re committed to using the Dispute Resolution Process to reach agreement

The Dispute Resolution Process is there to help us to advance talks when there is an impasse, so we’re fully committed to doing all we can to use it to get to a resolution and we hope CWU are taking the same approach. It is our joint responsibility to find a way through and agree a deal quickly.

We know many people are feeling the impact of the rising cost of living now so we want to get a pay deal done in as short a time as possible. And we hope those discussions keep things moving and avoid the possibility of unnecessary and damaging industrial action.

As we’ve said already, we must agree a deal that sets us up for tomorrow, and not just today, taking into account the changes we need to grow the business. We must respond to changing customer demands – bigger parcels, more next day parcels, seven-day deliveries and a service that is better for the planet too. We must adapt to thrive as a business.

Starting pay talks for Parcelforce Worldwide employees

I also want to let you know we have now begun talks with CWU to agree a pay deal for our Parcelforce employees.
We’ll update Parcelforce Worldwide colleagues as soon as we can.

Scheduled talks for a pay offer for Fleet employees

Finally, we have also arranged to meet CWU later this week regarding a pay deal for our Fleet employees, and the relevant changes required as part of that offer. Again, we’ll update you as soon as we can.

We value the joint work we have done with CWU and we would like to continue that now to get a pay deal done quickly.
Keep checking Workplace for official updates on how talks are progressing.

Thank you,
Ricky McAulay
Operational Development Director

They won't invest in us as people. They won't invest in the infrastructure. The toilets are cesspits. The yards are full of crap. They won't invest in vans or kit and it is embarrassing how filthy everything is. I'm down to my last two RM shirts and I can't order anything until November. Where's the new uniform? They want us to kill ourselves to get the job done. They want you to do more and more each day. We are literally working day to day. The job has been destroyed. I, personally, cannot wait for retirement. :wave

And yet profits and dividends are up!?

Your not alone fella, nearly done 40 and can’t wait to get out. Never had an easy day yet. Fed up with being expected to fit 11 hours work into a 8 hour day. Never seen staff leaving at this rate in all my years. Young energetic staff have had enough as well. Do the top really care?

So, who does the announcement of full year financial figures help more on the 19th of this month?
We've all seen this movie before.
Profits down = can't afford a pay rise.
Profits up = we need to bank this money in such uncertain times therefore no pay rise.

When we ballot the union must make it absolutely clear what industrial action they are proposing.

One day strikes are a complete waste of time. We lose a days pay and simply have the extra workload to cope with over the next few days. We need to be prepared to strike over a much longer period, which would potentially cause RM to lose the vast majority of its parcel customers to our competitors.

Ricky “prerecorded” McAulay needs to realise what Union are going to accept to even enter meaningful negotiations.

Any strings attached can be negotiated via Pathway to Change agreement, members need a pay increase to cope with increases in cost of living.

Sunday deliveries are now contractual for most new starters, afternoon shifts could also be implemented to new starter contracts.

Lets not forget Royal Mail gave shareholders £400million months ago and is also reported to have a profit of £500million for last financial year 21/22. Before covid Royal Mail was loss making, the parcel boom / covid contracts have put company back in profit. This is mainly due to hard work and dedication of frontline staff.

Im fully prepared to strike to get what i deserve.

edited bits on your post, but state of the toilets/yards/vans is our own responsibility, but there are some dirty feckers about, shirts can be ordered even if out of allowance, just wear an old t-shirt if they won't get you any, not a thing they can say once you've given them a week to order new in,
i left the rest in because you're correct :arrrghhh

Th CWU need to start negotiations with higher demands to combat RMs very low offer. We should ask for 20% no strings deal so we can end in the middle. 10% with minimum/no strings should be what we settle for. That would allow 7% for inflation and 3% reward for working through the pandemic which is reasonable!

The CWU always just start off at a level that they want to achieve, then have to except lower than they want or what we deserve, it's piss poor negotiating!

Would like us to strike for weeks at a time too none of this pointless 1 day crap that helps no one but RM. But I assume we aren't allowed to do that anymore?
Union what Union? Do we have a union?
