Worrying about a delivery/general update

Post by Throbobular »

Okay so, I started a few weeks ago, it's fine, it's tiring, I had a work coach for 4/5 days and he checks in with me daily.

I've been put on the worst round that no one else (except my van partner, who is also very nice) is willing to do, it's a rough area and it has a bad reputation but so far it's been okay. Im giving it a couple more weeks to see if it's a good fit once the newness wears off. Managers are nice, everyone I've met so far is lovely and very helpful.

But anyway, on to the reason for my post.. I delivered to a woman in the street, down the road from the address. She came up to me asking if I had any parcels for number 007 as she was waiting for them and had to run out to do an errand, and I happened to be coming up the street as she was walking down. I took photos of the parcels as the PDA instructed, handed them over and went about my day. She confirmed her name and address.

I have since realised I shouldn't have done it, I can't be sure she lived there even though she seemed genuine. Never happened before, my work coach didn't mention what to do in that situation and I didn't think to ask, and now I'm worrying. Hoping she was legit and that she thinks I'm really proactive :nervous

Should I have asked her to go back to her door, or should I have said sorry I can't deliver in the street but I can come back tomorrow? Should I have asked for ID??

I know for certain I won't be giving out post in the street in future.

It happens alot. Officially give em nothing tell them you'll be at their house in a few minutes and you'll see them there. Unofficially I've asked their name before and if it matches I give it to them.

What photos did you take if you are just stood in the middle of the street, as the photos should be showing the parcel either in the letterbox, on the door step with the door open, or in a safe place?

Just get them to hold the parcel down by their feet or out to the side only get the parcel and their hands in frame.

These pieces of 'advice' to a new postie who doesn't know the round are so bad and could get you sacked when something goes wrong.

You've said it's a bad round in a rough area - so I wouldn't put it past any dodgy character who knows who regularly gets parcels in a street to ask if there's a parcel for so and so and say - yep that's me. Do it by the book. You might think you're doing them a favour but would
they come down to the delivery office and provide a supporting statement to your line manager if the manager wants to give
you the elbow - don't think so somehow......

I guess so. I Don't want to be the 'do as I say not as I do' type of person. I've been doing the job along time and when people ask for advice I always tell them....officially do this but in reality I and 99% of posties do that. You pays your money and takes your chance.

Aye, it actually happened yesterday. Someone came up to the van asking if we had anything for XYZ house and my partner said no, then said to me to ask for ID if that ever happens. So I'll either ask for ID or just say 'sorry I can't deliver here, I have to deliver it through the door' or something

For those of you thinking of asking for ID - have you had any formal training as to what constitutes acceptable ID on the street?
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Surely not - it's included as part of the same training module we get for the procedure for handing letters and parcels over
in the street isn't it?

A point not mentioned yet is that the PDA has GPS so if theres every a complaint or denial of receipt then the PDA will show where it was scanned

And if its not scanned at the door step then that will cause you issues

Nowadays, I would always advise to scan at the door step even if they have ID in the street
If you tolerate this, then your paid break will be next

I have given parcel in the street in the past (think they showed a driving licence), probably shouldn’t have but nothing ever came of it.
