Streamlining/editing of mail

Hi folks.

When did streamlining/editing the mail become a thing?

On a busy day when I'm saying to my manager that I'm not going to complete in time and will be cutting off, the reply is usually streamline/edit your mail.

When did it become the posties responsibility to be "willfully delaying mail"?

Any thoughts?

We always did streaming especially when we did 2 deliveries pre 2004 Saturday when we did one delivery and it was a half day no mailsort on Saturdays and left over to Monday. Its not wilful delivery to leave mail behind if instructed by management you only get into trouble if you do it on your own authority and without consultation with a Lino/DOM

But the manager is putting onus on the posties to decide what mail is important or not.

I'd say that's not for me to decide.

I seem to remember, in the old days ,30 mailsort items a day, the rest put to one side. After a number of days the manager would walk round and negotiate overtime to clear the out standing mail? I also remember regular bag checks, to make sure you didn't bring anything other than docket lefts back.

Streaming, as directed by a manager when I started, was leaving any letters not 1st Class or DSA. Since Mailsort is practically extinct and there isn't much 2nd Class to make it worthwhile picking through, streaming hasn't been a viable solution to overrunning delivery for several years now.

As has been pointed out many times before all mail that arrives at a DO is due for delivery that day whether it's 1st class, 2nd class or mailsort (is that still a thing?).

What your manager hopes to achieve is difficult to understand, a failure is a failure, all items that are not delivered no matter what stream they are have to be counted and reported as such. If your manager isn't reporting these failures that is gross misconduct.

It'd need to be in writing from the manager otherwise if the s**t were to hit the fan, they'd just turn around and deny giving you the instruction to do so
