RMCtv : Nick Landon : Feedback on the rollout of photos on delivery and how that will best work alongside longstanding local safeplace instructions : ***Update 3 Apr***

Post by POSTMAN »

Nick

Hi all. We have had a lot of feedback on the rollout of photos on delivery and how that will best work alongside longstanding local safeplace instructions.

We’re talking to senders, the CWU and taking all of your feedback into account on this and expect to issue a formal policy change in the next few days.

But as there have been a lot of comments I wanted to keep you up to date on our current thinking and ask for any more feedback as we finalise our approach. Thanks again for all of the suggestions. Keep them coming. Here’s a quick video (converted to text) update.

Nick again

Since we've rolled out photo on delivery, the feedback from those customers has been incredibly positive.

They've seen a big reduction in the amount of people saying that they didn't receive an item. So that has been very successful. What we've also seen though, is feedback from, our posties that this is in some cases disrupting the longstanding safe place arrangements they've had with customers, which in the event that they're not there, they would leave an item.

So we are working through with those senders with all that feedback from you, with the CWU to agree the most appropriate approach.

We're not quite there yet. We're going through finalizing the details.

As you can understand, those are three really important stakeholders in what we're doing, and we need to make sure that we've got the best process taking all of that feedback into account, but what we think we want to do, I thought I'd share now. And it'd be great to get your feedback as we are finalising.

So first, if a customer has for that item sent through a safe place instruction, then clearly we should follow what is coming up on the PDA for that item, even if that's slightly different to your normal standing relationship, because they've made that request for that individual item.

So if the PDA tells you to do something, then please do that. If it doesn't, then what we'd like to do is if you've got a longstanding local arrangement with that recipient that says you can leave an item in a safe place, we want to allow people to do that. If that happens, then please, we would like everyone to follow the safe place process on the PDA rather than scanning it is delivered and leaving it there, so that we've got evidence of where it is that includes taking a photograph of that item in the safe place, we can see from all the data that many people are already doing this and it's working.

So that's what we think we want to roll down. We also think it'd be a good idea for posties and managers in the delivery offices to make a note of any of as local arrangements. Um, if it exists in something like a walk book, and that means that, we've got evidence of that request if there are any subsequent complaints against us.

And also if someone's covering that route, then they know what to do.

If there's no one in to receive delivery,we're proposing as part of this, which certainly there were some of the concerns that came back to us that no postie is going to be disciplined if they leave a packet in a safe place as a result of that local instruction.

But if we subsequently get a complaint from a recipient and they say, I never gave you that instruction, then we're going to need to show that information to the postie so they don't follow that local instruction again, if someone is going to say no, I never told you to leave it there.

We still want people to follow the existing processes around what is an appropriate, safe place. So, you know, no leaving it in, wheely bins, of course, but people don't always, ask us to leave items in somewhere, which is, uh, safe and dry. So follow those, standard instructions is what we want to roll out.

So that's what we're doing. We, uh, would like to conclude that in the next few days, and then we'll come out with an official update, but we wanted to keep you updated on what we are planning, what we are working through. If you have any feedback while we're finally, as in that, then we would love to know. So please drop me a line. Thank you very much all speak soon.

Why doesn’t he say they have had a couple of weeks to study the figures and the amount of 739’s is through the roof?

To me it’s incredibly simple:

1. Attempt delivery, and take a photo as required if someone in.

2. If no answer but PDA gives a safe place, safe place it (with photo).

3. No answer, no safe place but you have a long-standing agreement or there’s a sensible safe place? Leave there and photo it. A sensible safe place is a shed, garage, greenhouse especially out in rural areas. A silly safe place is a bin, doorstep or if it’s a particularly rough area.

Any complaint comes in goes on file (walk log?) and items to that address are P739d from now on.

IMO it means we keep local agreements, callers office isn’t swamped, and most recipients get their item the day of delivery (100% first time delivery right Simon?).
The day is gonna come when we’re all gonna have to testify.

Why didn't he listen to OPG's who warned him that would be the case?

DOM

OPG bit on delivery whilst taking a photo on the doorstep in Byfleet, near miss yesterday as well, whilst OPG taking picture in open doorways. OPG bend down to take picture and dog came from behind the door, jumped up and punctured his cheek. Maybe some coms need circulating about dangers of taking pictures in open doorways and not to bend down close to the house.

That just about nails it HTP my thought s exactly. :thumbup As always RM bring in some new system (that's not really been thought through) there's a mountain of unintended consequences .... and surprise ...... RM tell the Postie to revert to the tried & tested system that he's been using successfully for years!

I suppose it does give the impression that someone's trying to improve things but all they're doing is pissing the staff, and the residents, off. :cuppa

This. All customers should be treated as trustworthy until proven otherwise, if they're not, they go in the walk log and are p793'd.

One with a door that can be opened and closed behind you, three walls and a roof.
Enclosed being the important word in the description.

It's getting hard now the weather's turned nice and the customers are in their gardens to drag them back to their doorway and advise them you have to take a photo or they are not getting their parcel.

It's both a pain and embarrassing as we're basically telling them we longer trust them, hence why we now need a photo at their front door. One of my regular customers was sat in her car on her drive about to drive off, so I took a photo of the parcel with her car door open, as I could hardly force her to switch her engine off, get out of the car and open her front door just so I could take a photo.

I've done it twice now. Luckily both times the customer was understanding and I apologised for the inconvenience. At some point, though, it's going to result in a confrontation in which I'll be forced to refuse to hand over the packet. Is it mental health awareness week/month yet?

No it won't.
Because in the event of a confrontation the correct procedure would be to hand the packet over.

I had to do that the other day.
