Fairest way to share overtime?

Post by mattick »

What's is everyone opinion of the best way to share overtime?

My personal opinion is just to start at the top of the seniority list and work your way down asking each OPG who's in that day. Then the next day continue where the list left off until it starts at the top again and so on. Everyone gets an equal chance to earn some extra if any O/T is available. Seems a no-brainer!

My office manager and beloved union rep have devised a system that allows OPG's priority in choosing to do O/T on the Monday, if they have worked the previous Sat. If an OPG does O/T on a Sat and has annual/sick/rest week leave, then they have priority to O/T on the Monday the week they return. Failing enough O/T on the Monday, the list of prioritized people will continue down the week before any non-prioritized OPG's get access to O/T :Applause

In my opinion part timers should be offered it first as some in our place are on 25 hour contracts and it’s just not a liveable wage ( majority want a bigger contract just can’t get it ) plenty of overtime in our place so no arguments are really caused tbh the only system in our place is just a sheet that you put your name down on the week before hand if you are available for overtime

it depends by office surely

ours has a FCFS system which works. it's a big office and there's always someone cutting off.

that being said, there's always gonna be someone losing out whatever the system.

So the senior docket kings will get all the o/t, (and still finish within their duty time) while the part timer on 24 hours a week wont get a look in?

The top 40 in my office never do overtime, why waste time every day asking 40 people if they want overtime when you already know the answer?

I'm sure there are offices that full time staff work their day off each week as S/A.

Done unfairly in our office. Gaffers just ask the people they know will say yes. I get why, it's easier for them

Recruit dozens of uniformed bodies and there won't be a need for anyone to do any overtime other than the early IPS

There are many times when we have lapsed a couple of duties and staff have decided not to take it. Cue lots of drama about deliveries not going out and when thats failed here comes tom, dick and harry from the Sunday reserves and/or the employment agency to get the work done and save the day for the gaffer.

Many reasons why you should never truly rely on Royal Mail for your sole source of income although most people do

Same opinion stop doing overtime and they will have to employ enough people to do the job.i could do with extra cash but for the reason above and the fact I don't get paid at a higher rate I do no overtime whatsoever.

Your doing it wrong then, you need to do deal & sign for it before you go out, most of our overtime monkeys are being paid until 8/9/10 @ night & they are back home by 3pm feet up & cup of tea, they always ask for a spare van & dump their snail pace partner, take no D2Ds & bring back a “Cobble Box” full of single letters, good luck to em, get want you can :cuppa

Opgs put their name down on a list for what days overtime their available on any given week.

A rolling 12 week tally of staff hourly overtime is kept. Those who’ve done the least overtime hours in that 12 week period get it.

If you try to blow the overtime out (ie not scratching your name off the day before) you get an automatic 50 hour penalty added to your tally.
