overtime rate

Post by daveyeff »

i know this was mentioned back in October, when Simon Thompson was giving a piss poor excuse to justify why the overtime rate is less than basic pay. but i just noticed the other day the difference in the rate is increasing. since we went down to 37 hours our basic pay for a full time postie is £458.04 giving an hourly rate of £12.37. where as our overtime rate is £12.16 an hour. i asked the rep if the union had any plans to rectify this, he said ''don't work overtime'', which i though was a f***ing crass thing to say. young posties with partners/kids/mortgage or rent need overtime, so i wonder if it going to be addressed on the next pay rise. any comments?

Are you really going to quibble about a difference of 21p an hour? You're clearly claiming overtime wrong if that's your concern. Anybody doing over time is going to have finished earlier than the claimed amount thus negating any difference in hourly rate.

People want and do overtime to earn more money I would have thought, not to finish early, although obviously that does happen.
Yours is a weird and dangerous thought, don't worry bout the ot rate as you never work the full amount of it anyway.

Well a 21p difference equates to approximately a minute of "work time". Show me somebody who claims to have worked every minute of their overtime claimed and I'll show you a liar.

Take a pay cut by working overtime? I don't understand your rationale.

Are you one of these people who say they don't work OT because it's not "worth it" because the extra they made went on tax, failing to understand irrespective of how much you work below the higher tax threshold you get taxed the same.

That's utter rubbish! Do you not think people go over on a regular basis because their duty is too big? Not all overtime is negotiated ghost overtime you know!

This is exactly that. Some people claim pressure overtime and then the piss poor rate is laughable. In London it excludes the allowance too so in reality these people get paid pennies for any overtime they work. It obviously gets worse above first 10h OT. This leads to people cutting off( as it is not worth the hassle) and runners, ghosting people breaking every rule in the book in order to the get "value" of overtime paid. Proper overtime rate would definitely help the situation but if this is going to work for Royal Mail I am not too sure. Their overtime bill would get a lot bigger and people would then slow down and worked correctly claiming more time. It really is double edged sword.

So doing 2 deliveries in a day and literally running around for 6-8 hours covering a distance of maybe 20 miles+ isnt earning every penny?
