Team, you might remember my pre Christmas video on rental vans, we have to make sure we use our resources efficiently.

You know, it's really, really important part of making sure we had quality at the right cost.

So we have the money to invest in competing and growing our business and I know growing our businesses what we all want to do.

As many of you may remember, during Christmas, we relaxed some of the central procurement rules on van hire so that local managers could source additional vans if they needed them locally.

And I have to say that this approach worked very well. And I must say, a big thank you to the procurement team who against the odds did a totally brilliant job, procurement team, you really stepped up thank you very much.

And as I constantly say, we need the accountability and decision making as close to the doorstep as possible.

You know, the number of people, the number of vans, the number of PDAs, etc, need to be in the hands of the local management the local managers need to decide.

Now we've done a full review of the van situation, it's clear that there were differences between the requirements that some managers in the operations wanted and the view of the fleet team based on some working assumptions.

But as we dug into these numbers, we also found some of the interesting trends.

So a couple for you.

Around 500 of the vans that were in the operation of peak weren't actually used. And that was in the two busiest weeks of peak, and another 1500 or so did less than three miles a day.

So we work to get extra vans, when it looks like 500 that we already had we didn't use and 1500 we hardly used.

The other thing, as well as when we had a look is we only use vans for 5.2 hours a day and at peak around about 6.2 hours a day.

That means they're not used for around 18 hours a day.

There's no business I know, that can afford to have expensive assets, like vans and use for this amount of the time every day.

The other good news is we have 1000s of new electric vans actually arriving now, which was one of the promises we made last year.

So before next peak, we need to move the accountability for the van quantity and cost to the local managers. They need to take the accountability for having the right tools of the job for their teams, and manage the cost of them as well.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

We've got all these employees but they're not even moving for a third of the day! If we can eliminate sleep we can send the share price sky high.

Dear Super Si - you f****d up on the vans.

Shove your spreadsheets up your arse and stop trying to blame posties for needing the correct equipment to do the job. Yet another veiled attack on the people who do the work in the company, made by a deluded twat who knows f**k all about it.

If only there was a strong union to give a proper reply to your complete bollocks, but sadly Terry Bullshitter has fallen for your crap.

This last sentence makes sense, but if management jobs at DO level are going, who will manage this task?

It’s a cost of doing away with the bikes. How’s it relevant if a van does 3 miles a day or 30, if it’s a van share it’s a van share.

"we need to move the accountability for top floor fuckups to the lower echelons. When it all inevitably goes tits up we can give the scapegoats the bullet and have minimal impact on our bottom line. Not like when we got shot of Achim and whatsherface, how much did that set us back Keith?"

"Remember when we shat the bed when you know who f****d up deciphering the van data? We palmed off the procurement onto the screws who had been already been shouting for extra vans for the best part of six weeks previously? It all worked out as the total expenditure came out less than normal as we only had to rent vans for less than 4 weeks instead of the normal 10. It was a win/win so I awarded myself a bonus not dissimilar to the salary of two top ex-managers."

500 excess vans across ooh let's say 1400 offices = less than a third of a van per office going spare?

So are RM going to rent out the vans to uber and deliveroo drivers when not being used?
At least they won't look so much like a bunch of crusties lived in them the next morning.

This c*** is BEYOND parody

Sir Henry.

My biggest fear is that super si is going to say we have to half the number of vans per office then on week a the left side of the office work from 6am-2pm, and the right side of the office work 2pm-10pm using the same van. Then week b you rotate.

And as I constantly say, we need the accountability and decision making as close to the doorstep as possible.

------------------------------------------

So before next peak, we need to move the accountability for the van quantity and cost to the local managers. They need to take the accountability for having the right tools of the job for their teams, and manage the cost of them as well.[/i]

That reads like senior management are passing the buck for their failings, then finger pointing and virtually stating they want everyone else to be held accountable for their errors, because they have given the right tools to do the job, while omitting they then over-ride any decisions made locally and micro-manage any decisions.
Everything will be OK in the end, If it's not OK, then its not the end.
