Career Change - Postie to 7.5t driver

Hi,

I am currently on full time contract(37.5) from 25 hours since 1st Of Dec. Approx every week I earn min of £630 per week inc of OT. Most of the days I start at 4.30am and work till late.
If i'm selected for driver academy programme will I be earning a simillar amount of money? I dont mind working different shifts/weekends/overtime etc..
My friends and family says its better to be driver so i dont need to work outside experiencing different weather conditions....

Should i stick with the postie job?

Have a read of this thread. Job pays £546 plus shift allowance. Overtime on top of that.

So if someone get selected to this academy programme will do they still need to work as a postie till you get a driver duty or they will be full time into the driver duties??

If there are vacancies at a Voc and you've passed the training you'll be expected to apply for the role, it's part of the contract you sign before training. If there are no vacancies then I assume you'd stay on your current job until a vacancy arises or they need you to cover leave/sick etc.
I've applied and if I'm successful I'll be jumping onto the trucks asap assuming I pass the test!
Not sure if my seniority will be enough to get a place though, we should find out soon according to the email they sent out the other day

What about distribution in the local MC? Most distribution drivers these days seem to be agency

I believe that the business considers that any vacancy within an hours drive is expected to be taken by a driver it has paid to train.

Yes one of the questions was would you be willing to travel upto an hour to work. My nearest voc is 45 minutes away and id be happy to do the travelling in order to get off deliveries, 28 years of pounding the streets is enough for me. I'd happily jump at the chance of local distribution as well at my local mc
