It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Re: Rumour - random drug testing
Had this in the utilities and rail sector i worked in some years ago. It tends to catch the Canabis users out mostly as the test can detect it weeks after you last smoked a joint, as it stays in your system for ages.Postiepat3 wrote: ↑10 Feb 2022, 20:17Heard a rumour RM bringing in random drug testing for drink and drugs!!
Going through the procedure either "for cause" - e.g. post RTA, vehicle/equipment damage, workplace accident etc was how it was applied mainly at my last place. Although every now and then they'd have a purge and test 5-10% of the workforce without warning on a given day.
The testing procedure itself requires strict controls and as far as I recall only accredited persons can actually carry out the testing process and there is a strict protocol to follow (including sealing up/preventing persons using the toilets and accessing water etc, when then have been selected for a random test), documenting/labelling each and every sample vial and maintaining a clear chain of custody for the samples, plus accredited test lab procedures etc. Failure to follow the procedure means that results are invalidated even if proven to be a positive test.
Maybe RM are looking at just introducing pre employment D&A testing for new starters as that would be most cost effective?
Random testing of the entire workforce on ongoing basis will cost millions.

What would they gain from it? Might catch a few people out with random tests that's about it.

If the manager gave you one free can half way through a mail centre shift it would help with the repetative tasks.

It's not a rumour - regional and national management will face these tests weekly and if found to be not on drugs, face immediate suspension.

Re: Rumour - random drug testing
They don't need to be, but random drink/drug testing is nothing new. The railways (for one) was doing it decades ago to cut down on drunk/drugged drivers, and as staff can't be singled out for testing all staff were liable to be called in.
As RM has so many drivers it's a wonder it's taken them this long to get around to it.

Re: Rumour - random drug testing
Truth. The amount of times I've shared a van with a non-driver that stinks of beer at half eight in the morning.
And they always manage to rub it in, somehow. Like, if there's a midweek England game or something.
"You watching the match with a few bevies tonight then mate?"
"Um, I'll be watching it, but no bevies unfortunately. "
"What? I'm going down the boozer I am. Win or lose, I'm getting proper slaughtered I am. Why aren't you having a bevy then?"
"Um, I'll be chauffeuring you and your toxic halitosis around again tomorrow..."
Bloody non-drivers...
Sooner or later, a beat dog bites.
