I know not to take a van if I think its not road worthy tyres etc, is there a Royal Mail document that states this??

I found this on a van site, I know the gov web site says driver carries the can, just wanted the RM version if it exists?

The penalties a driver may receive for driving a defective vehicle will range depending on the type and severity of the offence. Fines could leave you seriously out of pocket, and worse, you could gain points on your licence or even end up having your licence revoked. Pleas of ignorance or that the vehicle belongs to your company are unlikely to see you excused the offence. If you believe a company vehicle is unfit for use, you have the right to refuse to drive it until your company has made the necessary repairs. A company cannot sanction or dismiss you on for raising concerns about the vehicle or refusing to drive it if you believe the vehicle not to be roadworthy.

Yeah it’s in the drivers handbook although I haven’t seen one of these for years.

There are new laws coming in March about phone/PDA use for navigation while driving. The gadget cannot be held in your hand, must be in a cradle attached to the dash or stuck to the windscreen. Many of our vans either have no cradle (hired vans) or the cradle's fallen off the bracket and is missing. It's a £200 fine and 6 penalty points . I wonder what my manager would say if I told him I'm not taking the van out unless it has a cradle fitted? I reckon I'd be on the naughty list. https://www.fleetnews.co.uk/news/compan ... into-force

Since my first day as a casual i wondered about this issue and i kind of assumed that there would be a temporary cradle that could clip onto an air vent or stick on the screen to hold the PDA. To my mind it should be covered (i.e. the control measure required) in the driving risk assessment as its foreseeable that hire vans will be used and therefore there is a Managment duty to control the risk of an unsecured PDA whilst driving. Anyone know where the generic RA for driving company vehicles is located?

If you join any other of the Courier Firms is a prerequisite of driving for them. You must be able to use a mobile phone one handed, to navigate or get directions, whilst carrying out a U Turn ... mounting both curbs .... whilst doing so.

You extra points for eating a sandwich on the move! Oh how RM wish we could all drive as well as our competitors, because they're more cost effective.

Why would you use the PDA while driving

When doing LAT's i have to rely 100% on the Route optimisation and not having the PDA balanced and unsecured is important. Not using it in ahands on way, but being able to see it without it sliding about all over the dash, onto the floor etc.
