26/01/22 Mount Pleasant Bulletin

Post by jimallen »

Hi, find below the Mount Pleasant bulletin of 26 January. Thanks for your comments!

STILL WAITING 1
This delay of the Parcel Sorting Machine (PSM) is a mixed blessing... we were expecting a resign (now maybe July?) and not looking forward to the chaos and musical chairs that come with it. But it's the job losses which are the big problem, and they shouldn't be inevitable. Because if we have a lighter job sorting parcels as a result of the PSM, all sorts of improvements in our conditions could result, like a shorter working week for all, without loss of pay.

STILL WAITING 2
So now we hear a new PSM will be installed in Romford first. And we'll be asked to cover their Down Stream Access work (and maybe more?). Knowing management, they aren't creating enough duties to cover the work... But the fact these duties are temporary also means that part-timers still won't be able to get what we've been waiting for, that is, full-time, permanent jobs into the future!

PS: And by the way, can anyone tell us how these duties are being allocated? Surely seniority applies, like for anything else?

PPS: So can anyone remember when was the last time that part-timers were offered decent full-time jobs? Management keeps saying that we're more full-timers than part-timers in the Mount - when we all know that it is the exact opposite!

AND BY THE 6th AND 7th DAY...
Just to be clear, the short-of full-time duties managers "kindly" offered us last year, aren't good enough. Not only are we still working less hours than full-timers, but to top it all, managers added the anti-social Saturday over-work into the bargain... Yes, on Monday we feel like we haven't had any rest at all!

OTT WITH OT
So management's into a fit of overtime-mania at the moment? Of course they are, since we've been short of hands for so long! And the excuse is always the same: there are too many absences. That might be true, but it just shows we aren't enough, simple!
PS: And where have all the casuals gone? We've seen them coming in on Saturdays, but that's it... We'll keep repeating this: there is enough work to share all week round, we need them in on permanent contracts!

SMALL BOSSES OUT...
We read in the press there are to be 700 job cuts in management across the whole of RM! Apparently that's almost 1 in 10 management positions, and including the DUMs, which means more mergers. We don't want to see anyone out of work, and it's not as if RM is going to return these 700 jobs to the shop floor…

...BIG BOSSES IN!
Oh yes, sorry, CEO Simon Thompson is hiring… hiring his mate from his days at Honda as Chief Operating Officer. He's also hired a former DPD general manager. No doubt they have dreams of transforming RM into a fully-commercialised parcel delivery company. But we know how to wake them up!

WE JUST WONDER...
This is just silly, to be told on Lates, each time we've slightly difficult questions regarding our duties, holidays, etc., that we should ask the book-room manager... who leaves at 3pm! So if we start at 5pm, are we supposed to come earlier to catch the manager, when we know that there is a big chance he'll know as little as everybody else..?

HOLIDAYS AT WORK
We're having a good break from the noisy Elephant this couple of weeks... We'd like him to stay away from the Mount, for as long as possible. We're not in a hurry to see him lumbering back!

MR HANG-AROUND ADVISES
How about this from CWU's Terry Pullinger on the current mess in RM: "If you're in a situation where a manager is refusing to recruit to a job, then you absolutely don't hang around, don't wait there...". This is a classic example of "do as I say, not as I do". And he's saying, we should all go for it. OK?

Are any other machines being got rid of to make room for the PSM? if there are I would have thought that the operators of them would get first dibs at the jobs on the PSM because of their TPM allowance. RM isn't going to be paying two lots of TPM allowance if they can avoid it

Does TPM not exist at all for PSMs, even just hoovering bits out?
