The covid test time bomb

Post by cobrakai »

According to RM 4-6 percent of parcels are covid test kits. Obviously this is a huge money spinner for the company. I’ve seen a figure of £8 a test as the amount RM receives per test.

No idea if this is true but obviously it’s a massive worry when the tests eventually stop or dry up.

The Government has hinted that the tests won't always be free which would massively cut demand. Also it's been hinted that the legal requirement to isolate when positive could be removed come March. If that's the case, then how many would bother to order one if covid will be treated like the flu? You're either to sick to work or you'll come in bunged and infect your colleagues like what usually happened at Christmas pre Covid. Hopefully things can soon return to normal, regardless if they then claim RM are skint.

Got to say i will be very happy if there isn't a need for test kits in the near future

Why's it a worry, less kits means less work, it's not like rounds have been reduced to allow for delivering the kits we just have to absorb the extra work, and RM must know this is only a short boost to their income/profits not guaranteed income/profits in the medium to long term.

I'm completely guessing but RM probably aren't getting much per test kit, obviously all adds up but probably not as much as it should be.
The only thing i am dreading is that period from when they say there will be a charge to the charge starting and the surge on orders.

My guess is that the plan is to scrap any rules/isolations, as soon as they can and that is when the charges will come in.

Why's it a worry, less kits means less work,
Less work with the same hours means a decrease in efficiency.
That leads to other pressures - reduced overtime, more lapsing etc etc etc.

Using 439 million parcels mentioned in Royal Mails own figures the other day at 6 percent it’s 26,340,000 that were covid kits at £8 (a figure I doubt tbh) it’s £210.3m in income..

Even at 4 percent it’s 17,560,000 so it’s going to leave a massive hole that will as mentioned above affect all the metrics on delivery and the companies bottom line.

Err we wouldn't be charging 8 squid to 'deliver' a test kit.

I can't see the big deal in this, yes it's lost work but there's kinda other work out there.
Do we all usually panic when a 'temporary' contract finishes?

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

Or they can decide to invest elsewhere.

What difference would that make to RM if people did invest elsewhere?

RM shares would be worth next to nothing and the company would grind to a halt?

I'll never understand why the company will grind to a halt if the shares are worth nothing, not too long ago there were no shares and the company got along just fine. Now the shareholder is our only concern. Yes they have shares but they put nothing into the day to day running of the company, I buy shares, someone gets my money and I get their bit of paper. It's all nonsence.

You'd hope that the companies etc who invest in RM shares appreciate that the extra income received from delivering COVID test kits won't last forever.
