Team - this morning we are publishing our latest trading update – for the three months up to end of December – this includes our peak Christmas period.

We delivered over 2.1 billion letters and 439 million parcels over this period – well done – the scale of our operation and what you do every day is enormous – thank you.

Letters continue to decline - addressed letters, excluding elections, are down 3 per cent compared to last year and down 17 per cent vs 2019.

Parcels continue to grow - domestic parcels volumes are still around a third higher than they were before the pandemic - although slightly lower than the same time last year when we saw more COVID restrictions re-imposed.

Today, we are also announcing some important proposed changes to how management is organised in our delivery operation.
DOM
Disgraceful that the video call to announce major change in operations took place at 07:30 in the morning when all the operators were not able to login because they were running the operation! What a way to treat people....Now all were hearing is 2nd hand information and rumour !!!!
These proposals are subject to consultation and do not impact the job numbers of frontline colleagues.

They also do not impact the agreements with our unions.

We will be sharing more information throughout the day.

We published our results for the third quarter and nine months ended December 2021 on Tuesday 25 January 2022 here...
https://www.royalmailgroup.com/en/inves ... entations/

Delivering for the Future; Proposed changes to our delivery operation

Today we announced a proposal to reshape the management of our delivery operation. This is subject to consultation and does not impact the job numbers of frontline colleagues.

The aim is to be more effective by reducing layers of management and having a simpler structure that moves decision making closer to the doorstep.
Our analysis tells us that if we have a flatter level of management presence in our delivery offices, freed up and empowered to make decisions, we can help and support our frontline workers in a more accessible way, to deliver a great service for our customers locally.

We fully intend to continue building on our collective team spirit, ensuring we clear each office every day and work toward achieving our quality standards. We are also heavily investing in our Royal Mail Academy, where we will be providing in house training programs for our management teams.

We will be working through the proposals in consultation with Unite/CMA, also with our colleagues at the CWU where we will work hard to ensure continuity for our frontline workers.

What are we proposing?
We are proposing to introduce a flatter structure with a new role of Customer Operations Manager. The proposal is that this will replace Delivery Office Manager and Delivery Line Manager

Where we have multiple Customer Operations Managers in one unit, they will work as a team to support our frontline workers, ensuring we deliver an excellent service to our customers and provide focus on our quality obligations

We are proposing that the current 20 Service Delivery Leader areas will move to ten regions to replace the former North and South. Overall this proposal would provide a flatter structure and would improve two-way communication up and down the organisation between our postmen and postwomen and the Executive Board, this is our motivation in which we would all benefit.

How will this affect me?
First and foremost, we will have colleagues that will be facing change which is always an unsettling time, important therefore we support each other through this period

There will be no impact to frontline jobs or terms and conditions through this proposal

We will discuss with the CWU how best to develop the work place to complement the new Customer Operations Manager role and how we continue the current processes such as revisions, annual leave groups, weekly resourcing etc. To be clear nothing will change in respect to these elements, we will maintain close discussion with UNITE/CMA and CWU to ensure we manage any change in the most effective way.

Why will this be better for me?
Overall, it shouldn’t be very different from how you work now. Our objective is to have decisions made quicker, issues resolved faster and more access to help and support from managers. One of the main responsibilities for the Customer Operations Managers would be to build trust and engagement, whilst working closely with the local CWU representative. Their role would be to support you to do your job and under the new proposal, they will have the appropriate training, more autonomy and capacity to do this effectively.

What will happen next?
We will enter into a period of formal consultation with UNITE/CMA, this had a legal minimum period of 45 days, however it can take longer. In addition to this we will be holding parallel discussions with the CWU to ensure we work together on issues and solutions. We do commit to keeping you informed on a regular basis with progress.

Where can I find out more about this?

You can print and share this information about the proposals with your teams here and print and use this information for discussion in your WTLL sessions or distribute in your Workplace groups. (https://www.myroyalmail.com/sites/defau ... mms_v3.pdf) You are welcome to post your thoughts and comments on the proposals on Workplace. If you have specific questions, please ask your manager in the first instance - frontline colleagues will not need access to the closed Delivering for the Future group on Workplace.

All of our proposals are subject to consultation and we are committed to listen and develop our plans with UNITE/CMA and CWU, together we have many years of experience which can shape our future.

For the record, they previously got rid of 2000 screws a couple or so years back and admitted they had made a mistake recently.
While I am not their biggest fans (The screws) this really is a shitf##k of a useless company that does not know what it is doing.
Shameful!

Seriously busy will tidy up text as soon as I can.

Simon Thompson

good morning.
today, we have issued our latest trading update, which covers the three months up until the end of december, including the all important christmas.

we delivered over two point one billion letters and forty nine million parcels over this period, and we have continued to see the trends that we've seen throughout.

address letters excluding elections are down three percent compared to last year. and dance 17th. and for domestic parcels, volumes are still around a third higher than they were before the pandemic, a little, slightly lower than the same time last year, when we saw more covid restrictions reimposed.

today, we are also announcing some important proposed changes to how management is organized in our delivery operation. these proposals are subject to consultation and do not impact the job numbers of frontline colleagues.

our intention is to ensure, through the consultation that we do not impact current agreement principles with unite, cma or our colleagues at the cwu.

we will ensure we are in close contact with both unions through the proposed changes.

our analysis of performance shows that our smaller teams perform better.
smaller teams are better at safety, trusted relationships, quality for our customers and productivity.

what we're proposing is to divide ourselves up into smaller teams with a single management player who lead a smaller group of the front line team.

importantly, however, we want to maintain the collective spirit we are famous for. therefore, whilst we focus on supporting colleagues and delivering through smaller units, we will remain one team in.

a proposal is that all teams will be led by a customer operations manager, rather than the current roles of delivery, office manager, delivery line managers and cover manager.

and the key word is customer.
a real focus on delivering great quality for our customers.

we are also proposing some further changes to the functions and management layers above to ensure we are set up to support the front line management. and in turn, our frontline colleagues, as you have heard me say many times, the front line managers decide.

there are calls happening throughout today with our affected colleagues, so that will be more information provided later through our usual communications channels. and there will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions and find out.

but the key thing is, this is all about smaller team where local managers decide.

i also want to touch on quality, and what you will have no doubt been reading in the press.

i know how much effort you put in every day. and as i have said before, even though we currently have twenty thousand temporary personnel supporting the team, it is only a few weeks ago. we have fifteen thousand of the core team, and it's a huge number.

but the good news is every day our absence has been getting better, and quality is getting better.

i know the quality isn't an issue everywhere, but where it is. let's work together to get back on top.

the delivery performance task force is doing important work with the officers most impacted and i can see very quick improvements when they get involved.

but they cannot be everywhere. we all need to take accountability for getting back on top. and i know the local management team and the local reps will work brilliantly together to do just that.

two of the areas that have been in the papers, the most chelmsford and echoes are now clear, well done.

i visited both sites, and it is great to see the progress that they have made and team, if they can do it. so can you?

so far this year, we have already spent around £340,000,000 on sick pay, overtime and temporary staff. and as i said, twenty thousand of our temporary personnel are still with us, and a big thank you to.

what this year so far has underlined for me is just how important our transformation is to deliver great quality, particularly in delivery.
what we can now clearly see both in the offices when i visit. and in the data analysis is that the more parcels we have, the harder it is to deliver consistent letter quality.

the data has also shown us that you are about three times more likely to have cleared your office before christmas. if you had done a revision.

so, as well as investing in new hubs, new parcel automation, u.pdas, new uniforms and new bands, we now need to change our ways of working in delivery urgently.
delivery offices are a hundred percent optimized for letters, but not optimize for parcels.

team, some days i find it hard to read the criticism, and at times i might feel it's a little unfair.
but it is a reminder of the important role we play in society. every letter. and every parcel counts for our customers, they might not expect it from others, but our customers expect perfection from royal mail everywhere every day.

now, more of the team are returning to work. let's show them what we can do.

15,000 staff of with Covid absence !
What does that tell you Simon?
As the Government begins to Normalise Covid by lifting restrictions ,shouldn’t the workplace be more Covid conscious and have more stringent working practices?
Because something clearly is not working and is costing dearly.

I was reading that based on the stats the extra restrictions that Wales and Scotland had that England didn't, made absolutely zero difference to the spread of Omicron

Come April, RM will have a major dilemma, with minimum wage increasing to £9.50, how many will be attracted to start at £10.85, when the see how RM is being treated in the press and the way the revisions and workload are seen.

Plus the jobs that are available never seem to be full time.

Job seekers will opt for a less stressful role at Tesco stacking shelves, and guaranteed hours

EXACTLY what happened with one of our lot, had enough, f****d it off and now works at Tesco. There's been quite the exodus at our office.

Never has the chasm...(between those that post the letters & deliver the parcels, to those that look at a spreadsheets showing how many of them have been delivered)...been so wide.

Our office was on the RM website as an office affected with delivery delays. We were on RM website list of offices for two weeks, received ZERO targeted support.
Rep was informed that we could not get support as we were not reaching our productivity targets. This ‘targeted support’ line is false and quite patronising.
Our two agency workers were told not to come back after xmas (shameful) and plans for recruitment were put on hold.

So yeah, targeted support is a PR line, in reality its non existent but at least looks good for customers :dance

SIMON SAYS:

The above data shows very clearly that we can claim an astonishing 33% increase in temporary 'resources' - or staff - across the business in just 48 hours! Team, this goes to show what an extraordinary job we're doing not just in delivering mail for our customers, but in being able to make data-backed claims, not just covering recruitment, but across the business.
