You must inform a manager as soon as you know you can't complete. It might be an idea when you tell them to also have someone else with you.

Inform manager before commencing delivery that you believe you will not be able to complete
Ask manager what do you want me to do?
If you believe it does not help much inform your Rep to reach an agreement

Manager will highly likely say it A. It looks light B. You should be able to complete C. There is nothing here
You can respond with A. What are traffic figures? B. What are the traffic figures? C. What are the traffic figures

When you inform manager you are covering yourself for any future grief

On completion of prep including daily D2D amounts, inform a manager that you require assistance to complete in your alloted hours. (Don't say I'm cutting off as soon as you see the boxes and bags piled up on frame) If they don't offer you any ask what they would like you to do inorder to complete. They may suggest leaving large parcels or leaving loops and prioritising tracked. It's up to them to decide what you should do. Whatever you agree at this stage make sure you have overestimated so that there is no danger of you going over as once you cut off you are unlikely to get paid OT if you get it wrong and stay out. Additionally it's a bad idea to bring anything back to the office once you agreed what you would take out. This is the best outcome. 2nd best is if you cannot agree an amount to take you to your time you can be asked to take it all out with the caveat that you will ring the office at an agreed time ( for us it's 1 o'clock ) and inform them what you will be bringing back. This method is more scary and feels more pressured but as long as you have followed this process (and worked all day at a reasonable pace) you are untouchable.

In the 2nd scenario getting rep or witness involved is also good practice

When I tell mine I might struggle today he just shrugs his shoulders and says do your best , he has no answer to the problem.

Ask your rep how the cutting off procedure works locally. Yes it’s a National agreement but you will be surprised how it differs in practice office to office.

It seems to depend on who you are in our depot. Some of the RDCs regularly just take half a walk out without asking and managers turn a blind eye. Others of us (myself included) get told to take it all and if we can't complete come back 20 minutes early and get it back in the frame

If doing packets use the RO-N app to your advantage its the agreed tool.Scan 'em all in then hit the manager with it.

The key is to have the argument (because that for me is generally what it is) when prep is complete, before you bundle up. For some unknown reason some linos like to still count mail, not parcels,(even though we are now a parcels company), meaning you end up leaving more mail in than you thought originally as the clock ticks. The whole process gets very wearing after days and days of it. The last straw for me was that they 'didn't have access to the PDA data; to prove damn well that you weren't making it up. I was off with stress then, and then I moved to easier duties as a solution.

You're quite correct Redneck. That's the right time to inform your DOM. He needs to actually see how much mail there is in your frame. In the past they've told Posties to take a Tea Break and then counted the empty slots (sometimes accompanied by the Union Rep). This gives them the call rate and then they can check the traffic figures and ..... try and BS you into completeing.

I understand your problems with the daily fight. I think it's definately down to the type of Manager and how desperate he is to get his bonus. How many of us have had that 15 minute argument? You've just got to say, "If you're not willing to take the Duty Holder's word for it, all the time we spend here arguing about it will just be less mail I'll be able to take out". Years ago they might have got away with it but nowadays everyone's so pushed There's hardly any time spare in the system.

Ours come round and ask us at our frames "what's the plan today" feckin clueless tbh, we tell them what we are taking because we kinda know roughly what we'll manage to get done... Its 1 duty + tracked off the other and we do the same next day to the other walk.

Always chasing your tail and the standard parcels build up.
