driving for royal mail

does anyone know if royal mail can force you to do a driving duty?
i've been in the job 11 years and have had my own walk for 7 years
i've still got my original contract and driving wasn't a requirement of the job

i only ask because a new starter is refusing and has been sucessful because he says
that according to his contract it wasn't a requirement for the job!!!

even though i thought it was?

When i first started the only requirement was walking fit and could ride a bicycle but not compulsory to have a licence

I believe the answer is NO! The only time RM can force you is if you were employed as a RM driver, as this would have been part of the requirement for working for RM, it has never been a requirement to be able to drive to do a delivery, work in processing or do admin work.

In my DO having a driving license has been a requirement for about 5year ie. anyone joining must have a license.

I cant answer for other areas only my own, but I know when adverts go into the local press, a driving license is not a requirement unless its specific to the job, ie HGV or LGV driver.

I'd have thought unless you have been taking in your license for it's 6 monthly check (for points, banned etc) then the answer would be no. We've had it at our Delivery Office where staff have moaned about being asked to maybe fetch staff members in from the end of their walks etc and when asked were adamant that they'd not shown their license to Management. Upon checking though it turned out they indeed HAD presented their license and when confronted with the evidence were then told, "I didn't ask you do go in on my behalf did I!!"
