Unauthorisated deduction.

Hello ,on my last payslip (07.01,2022)i had minus 3 hours, Two weeks ago on my payslip I had 3 hours overtime (someone in my office put by mistake ).Today I received 2 payslips ,so I did not know about it, When i checked my bank account I saw that I paid fee because I didn`t have enough money on my account to pay all may direct debits .Can anyone from my office ,or HR make deduction from my wage witout aking me ,exceptet NIC and tax ?Thank you.

Your bank will charge you for going overdrawn. Best speak to them and if you can't manage your money to cover your bills speak to your bank and start looking for a better paid job.

Hi. Thanks for responce. I was meaning that deductioin by made my manager, line manager or HR, not by my bank.Into my account came money that was send by Royal Mail. They made a deduction from my wage not aksing for confirming by me or even inform me about that deduction.

Yes, they should have informed you it was going to happen.
But at the same time, surely you would kinda know anyway?

CWU Overpayments Recovery Procedure

3.6 Royal Mail’s policy is to seek recovery of overpayments of pay by agreement, wherever possible. However, Royal Mail reserves its statutory right to deduct from salaries any monies owed. The CWU notes it is Royal Mail’s policy to reclaim overpayments of wages in these situations by deducting 10% of the individual’s gross basic pay per pay period until the overpayment is fully recovered. This will be a last resort and only applied after all reasonable efforts have been made to reach an agreement with the employee concerned. Royal Mail commits to dealing with overpayments in a reasonable and sensitive manner and with due regard for individual circumstances throughout the period of the overpayment.

But as it was only 3hrs they obviously thought to take it back as soon as they could.

A lot of us started this job because we'd been out for a while. Redundancy at the start of the pandemic took all my savings and 2 overdrafts before I managed to get a job and personally, I'm still struggling to tread water financially.
It may not be the best paid job out there but it hires, and pays, and when you have literally less than nothing that's what you take

I always inform my manager when I have more or less on my payslip,unfortunetly I am sick at the moment, I didn`t check my bank account and I received today 2 payslips together ( WC 31.12 and 7.01)

I have to agree with you in that its a job and pays regularly and is better than some. I dont know where all these magical jobs that advertised with great pay? As few to none are in rural communities! Large towns and cities yes, but rurally your lucky if you get anything above minimum wage.

Assuming they simply just deducted the 3 hours overtime paid to you error, then you can't really blame them for going overdrawn, as you clearly received, and I assume subsequently spent, overtime payments which you weren't entitled to receive.

You either did or didnt check your bank account make your mind up... so paid 3hrs ot for hrs you didnt work but only realised they took it back when it was deducted from your wage ohh somehow i dont think your telling whole truth.

You either did or didnt check your bank account make your mind up... so paid 3hrs ot for hrs you didnt work but only realised they took it back when it was deducted from your wage ohh somehow i dont think your telling whole truth.

I was checking my account after receiving payslip (two in one day ), I had other matters to attend to earlier ,and I dident get 2 payslips until later on yesterday.Your answer has nothing to do with my question I asked if someone can deduct money from my wage without informing me about it.

If it was a considerable sum then Royal Mail Wages will send you a letter informing you of your overpayment and ask how exactly you would like the money deducted but for 3 hours overtime then sadly no, it does state on your payslip if you are overpaid it will be immediately be deducted from future earnings.

You will also have payed deductions on the 3 hours in, but the 3 hours out would be before deductions, not good really you would have thought they would of just let it go as it was their mistake.

The three hours out would have reduced taxable pay and effectively recouped the incorrect deductions on the incorrect three hour payment.

Also if your funds are running that low then surely you'd have noticed the extra money the week before and queried it?

I'd suggest you go and speak to someone at the bank....if you explain the situation you may get lucky and find that they will credit back the unauthorised overdraft fee to your account.
