Am I right in thinking RM only give a basic reference with start/end date and reason for leaving? No attendance record etc?

Just make one up and use a close friend to fill in. I've never had anyone ring my references. I'd only be truthful if it was for a job the required experience gained from the previous job.

Going to work for a big company who outsource background checks to a dedicated company. Not going to risk getting found out lying about references

The company I went to work for sent a comprehensive reference which the line manager completed, not sure if they’re required to though.

Did you go direct to your line manager or go through 3rd party services HR? I thought line managers wernt allowed to give references
