Managers prepping frames

Post by Mickeybrowneyes »

How long are managers allowed to prep frames and sort packets for. Is there a specific time frame they are allowed. They are sorting all morning at my office and I feel that could easily be morning overtime for some part timers who are crying out for docket. Can a union member request them to stop of does it have to be a rep?

Probably need my tin hat on for this one but,

Why should managers not sort mail as they are also employees when needed?

How can they designate advance overtime when they do not know who is going to be sick each morning?
Managers have to work out total employee hours that day against traffic received.

Deliveries, especially, are now optimised. If you do not get out on delivery by a specific time, you cannot complete during duty time. Managers have a statutory and contractual obligation to make sure that does not happen.

Union Members took the money by accepting national agreements to be more efficient, so no use complaining.

This results from partnership agreements

Doesn't it just highlight an imbalance of part time/ full time staff numbers... An operation by Royal Mail over the years to save money on holiday pay/sick pay and bonus payments. And then paint over the cracks by getting managers to prep.

I think we should as member be able to challenge. This happens regardless of sick leave or annual leave coverage so I don't buy that argument.

With these new revisions we are expected out the door by half nine some days and half the office is prepping part time walks while the managers are sorting parcels.

Surely a good rep would argue the case for more part timers to be made up or at least offered docket Wednesday onwards. No?

Will say it again

You voted for this by accepting national agreements and taking the money with introducing efficiency measures

And it was voted for be delivery staff, RDC and MC staff are outnumbered by at least 2:1, might even be 3:1 now with the increase in casual numbers over the last couple of years. It's not unusual now for RM staff to be outnumbered by casual/agency staff

Regardless of what we voted for managers should not be performing OPG work unless there is a direct threat to the USO.
Any rep who is allowing managers to remove overtime opportunities from part time colleagues shouldn't be a rep any longer.

Given that we voted for these efficiency measures - where are the managers hours recorded and how does that effect the office efficiency?
It isn't efficient to pay someone a manager's wage and then have them performing OPG level tasks.

If you keep coming back to efficiency then surely managers doing 8 hours of sorting between them in the mornings means that we have one manager too many. So they should cut the number of managers if they have so much time to do our work every day.

I understand that we voted for an agreement that allowed these practices to be more commonplace in DO but surely we still have a right to defend our jobs and overtime when managers are doing work that is not in their job description.

If we cant defend that then what's the point really. They can do what they want

People still cannot see the bigger picture

They might well be management, but the majority are not substantive grade and abused by senior managers

They are also EMPLOYEES, the same as you

For the record, agree any unit needs to be fully staffed, but you agreed to "Flexing Up" with high traffic figures

If I remember rightly the managers own union have told them not to do OPG work.

I agree with your comment. A lot of Managers are getting more grief from their Boss than we get from them. :no no They often get threatened by their Bosses about losing their jobs (something even we don't suffer from). I've often said to our Manager, "If I was you I'd tell your Boss to stick his job and just apply for a Posties job" :hmmmm You can't say it's an easier option when they're out delivering as well as trying to get on with the office admin. :arrrghhh

A lot of them are stuck between a rock, and a hard place. They know they're not meant to be doing Postie's work ... But they're short of staff and their Boss is on their back to clear their DO...or else! Our Manager has just been told his job is being advertised, he's got to apply for it if he wants it FFS :d'oh!

I know there's a lot of idle bastard DOMs out there, that have a real easy time, but it's definitely NOT a job I'd want. :cuppa

You rep should be raising this at the resourcing meetings, if it’s been raised and is still happening it should be passed further up and a disagreement lodged. As you have said they are taking overtime opportunities away from opg’s. Managers shouldn’t have time to do it anyway if they are doing their job :left:
