Throughout the 2007 postal dispute we used a wide range of communications initiatives to support the YES vote campaign, support the strikes and inform our members of developments where possible. The communications campaign was aimed at supporting our industrial strategy and was intrinsically linked throughout the dispute.
It is our intention now to review the whole communications strategy, measuring the successes and failures. The purpose of the review is to identify which elements of our strategy were successful in growing and maintaining members support and which elements were less successful. The purpose will be to learn from both good and bad with the aim of continuously improving our communications.
The review will measure the effectiveness of all strands of our communications including direct national mailings, Voice, posters and campaign literature, media coverage, regional and local communications.
The review will be carried out through a series of focus groups with members, polling and interviews with officials and reps. The largest aspect of the review will be concentrated on lay members.
The review will take place with immediate effect and is being carried out by The Campaign Company, our regular provider for polling and measurement exercises. The work will commence from this week and randomly selected members will be receiving telephone calls inviting them to focus groups conducted by representatives of The Campaign Company. No official or representative of CWU will be present in these focus groups - simply the members invited and The Campaign Company. One or two groups will comprise of local reps.
Your support for this initiative is requested and should you receive calls or concerns from members being approached, you will be able to inform them this exercise is purely controlled on behalf of CWU and hopefully encourage participation.
Not all areas will be covered by focus groups or polls but many of your Branch areas will be during the review.
Between 31st January and 21 February the following areas will have members randomly selected for invitation:
Nine Elms
Paddington
Peterborough Delivery
Birmingham (local reps)
Cardiff
Swansea
Dundee
Perth
This is the first phase of the review and I will keep Branches informed as we take further initiatives. At the conclusion of the review a full report will be made available to Branches.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been. My BFF Clash The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
Will they be having further reviews because that itinerary has missed all of Northern England, Northern Wales, Northern Ireland, the South West and large parts of Scotland. Yet they have 2 locations fairly close together in South Wales, Scotland and London. Peterborough and Birmingham are spread out enough.
However the idea is good and if I do get asked I will be saying that the communication could have been better and that RMC put them to shame. The official communications were not bad just too slow and too Big City orientated.

Yeah its being done in different phases and should involve nearly every branch come the end!!

in my humble opinion a very poor end to the 2007 strike campaign scuppered a good start and middle. The trouble is that all that will be remembered in the comms blackout and you will find that this has nothing to do with Kevin Slocombe and the comms department but all to do with the orders given by the negotiators!!

There's the rub! How on earth can the leadership agree to a secretive negotiation without the membership knowing what is on the table and to what extent we are being sold down the river. It's a bit like going round the supermarket blindfolded and then being asked to pay for the crap some halfwit has thrown in the trolley at the checkout.
I would hope we would dispense with the current negotiators and if not certainly make it clear that there will not be a repeat at the next round of negotiations and that the good folk of Burslem would NOT be left in Limbo next time.
There should most definitely be a much closer scrutiny of the machinations afoot by lay members at all stages. There are far too many fat cats making a good living out of us.

A cynical person might conclude that this review is intended to deflect/missappropriate blame for the consequences of this agreement upon the shoulders of innocent parties?
