One of the reasons I wanted to be a postie was to work on my own. 1 year in the job I’m suddenly told here’s a van to share, some days you will work with Bob who walks at 0.5mph and doesn’t care if he works until 6 in the evening and other days you will work with Jim who comes in early skips breaks and likes to sprint around to finish 2 hours early. Hands down worst part of the job.

Completely agree. You can get some good banter if you get a decent partner, but on the whole I preferred working alone.

True. The slower postie will plod along hoping you walk faster and deliver more to compensate and the runner will be rushing round lobbing parcels over the back gate wondering why you're bothering putting slips in. I have known many posties who fell out after working in pairs. One guy p*ssed that many posties off that the DOM had no choice but to give him his own round. Its funny how he's flying round now...

Keep your eyes peeled for a rural or hct duty then. Or if you're office does LAT duties.

I still say bike duties were more efficient when you factor in the cost of the vans. Vans for bigger pkt only duties, bike single walks for mail and small pkts. Got to be more cost effective. Add up all those minutes after every loop that either one is waiting for the other for whatever reason, gotta be costing 15 min a day per pairing, 50k van shares, 12.5k hrs a day ,£155k a day or just under £50million a yr. That's per pairing, so £100m when you X by 2. All for just 15 mins or 2 mins dead time at the end of each loop.

Long wait until I get up the ladder for one of them I’m afraid, all taken by the senior guys which says it all. Nobody wants to be in a shared van if they have the choice.
