Less than 15 years ago , Royal Mail expected all staff to work the hours they would normally work on the non service day on their other days of attendance for that week.

The reason being is the non service day is not the same as a Bank Holiday and therefore individuals contracted to a 37 hour working week will work less hours that week. The same applies for part timers who would be expected to normally work the Saturday.

The CWU negotiated an end to claw back of hours when a non service day was requested.

However we could not convince Royal Mail to pay Bank Holiday credits for a non service day especially as anyone who gets the non service day off will probably being working less hours that week. And yes I know it is Christmas Day and New Years Day but they are non service days and not Bank Holidays.

Is the Sunday Boxing Day classed as a non service day too and if so will it mean those who are contracted to work Sundays will miss out also?

The normal rule of thumb is...

If A day is a bank holiday, then you get it off, and if it's your day off on that day you 'get it back'.
If A day is classed as a 'NON SERVICE DAY' then you get it off but if it's your day off on that day you WON'T get it back.

I'm near enough sure that is correct.

The Ofcom consultation about an exception for Saturday 1 January runs until 13 December. We expect Ofcom to make a decision shortly after that.

Saturday 25 December - Christmas Day
Sunday 26 December - Boxing Day
Monday 27 December - Christmas Day Public Holiday
Tuesday 28 December - Boxing Day Public Holiday
Wednesday 29 December -Normal service day
Thursday 30 December - Normal service day
Friday 31 December - Normal service day
Saturday 1 January - New Year's Day - awaiting Ofcom decision to become a non-working day
Sunday 2 January - Sunday
Monday 3 January - New Year's Day Public Holiday
Tuesday 4 January - Normal service day (Public Holiday in Scotland)
