Tax on Royal Mail Vans
Do Royal Mail and employees pay tax on taking vans home as this is a benefit in kind and not pool vans as they are not allowed to be taken home overnight by employees, just curious how this works or are royal mail dodging tax.

Re: Tax on Royal Mail Vans
According to HMRC, you won't be taxed for insignificant private use of a company van.
Basically this means commuting directly to and from work, although you are allowed to stop off on route eg. to pick up a paper.
I agree when I checked into it in the past I got the impression you only pay tax if your employer gives authority for private use. Royal Mail expressly don't giver permission so no tax implications.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Yes but commuting to work is private use ,you can only use it if you are driving to a temporary place of work not the same delivery office ,as you have not started shift and then you finish shift that is classified as private use, just wonder if they have told the inland revenue the full story as employees are receiving benefit in kind with free transport to and fro work while other posties pay for their own transport, would be interesting to get someone from the inland revenue's take on this.POSTMAN wrote: ↑05 Dec 2021, 20:37According to HMRC, you won't be taxed for insignificant private use of a company van.

it isn't classed as significant private use and doesn't incur a BIK charge (and as long as the van is not used for other private use like
doing your weekly ASDA shop or picking the kids up from school etc.).

Also, van retention at home it's been going on for donkey's years and no one has been busted for extra tax.

They could do their weekly shop while stopping off to buy the paper though.yellowbelly wrote: ↑05 Dec 2021, 22:06If you do a quick google, you will find that all the accountancy sites that pop up state that although commuting is classed as private useguardianangel wrote: ↑05 Dec 2021, 21:45Yes but commuting to work is private use ,you can only use it if you are driving to a temporary place of work not the same delivery office ,as you have not started shift and then you finish shift that is classified as private use, just wonder if they have told the inland revenue the full story as employees are receiving benefit in kind with free transport to and fro work while other posties pay for their own transport, would be interesting to get someone from the inland revenue's take on this.POSTMAN wrote: ↑05 Dec 2021, 20:37According to HMRC, you won't be taxed for insignificant private use of a company van.

Re: Tax on Royal Mail Vans
I use my own car to get to and from work but I don’t see what the big deal is here. If OPGs sometimes gets a perk, good luck to them. If that perk were taken away, would anyone else be any better off? No. So why fret about it?

Re: Tax on Royal Mail Vans
The above information on taking vans home is correct, however it is a nice extra perk for some posties that many others are not getting!
