When to decide to just deliver parcels

Hi I’m new to the job started beginning of November. I’m just wondering when is it the right time to decide I’m just delivering parcels as I have loads of mail. Don’t get me wrong but I’m more then happy to have overtime but maybe one day I will need to be back for a certain time. Also it makes me laugh when you get other posties making silly remarks about getting back late. It makes me think I wish I was here when yot1st started to see how you did but oh well

When you're told to do it by your Delivery Manager seems the obvious answer? However, it's rare occasions a postie will be told to just deliver parcels usually you are expected to deliver some mail.

I still don't understand how experienced posties get back to the yard so early, what's the secret?

You can't decide to 'just deliver parcels' - that is if you're on a 'normal' walk and not a parcel duty.

You need to familiarise yourself with what is commonly know as the 'cutting off procedure' or officially

Royal Mail & CWU National Joint Statement Avoiding Delay (Commit to Deliver) and Reporting Standards

- ie what to do in the event when you're preparing your walk and you realise that you're not going be able to complete the
delivery within your contracted hours and you're unable to work OT to complete it.

Me and my partner very nearly did this today, delivered 1 bag each, the rest of the time tracked.

On busy days , I’m told to prioritise specials , tracked and my collections whatever mail gets delivered after that is a bonus . That’s what the job has become.

If you want to work to your time then, you just have to use your own judgement on how much you can get done and when to stop mail and focus on tracked. It's not always easy but if you have time spare after the tracked you can always continue with the mail.

You'll likely be expected to notify your manager and have a big discussion of why you cannot finish your round. If I need to be away dead on time I tell them before leaving the depo, and if needed tell them then it won't be getting finished. Most the rounds I do never finish on time so if i'm working to time they know they need to take some off me or leave some.

Almost word for word with me ,but not months its been years and still nothing gets done

For me its the other way round. Ive been doing dedicated parcels for almost 4 weeks now, and on lighter days ive been going back to the DO and taking out any left parcels and doing a few loops of letters on walks that have not been done.

No problems for me other than PDA issues and that some of the rural areas are poorly lit, so with it being darkish by 4.30 now its delivery by torchlight.

That does happen. some posties can pretty much dictate what they do, whilst newer members of staff get the third degree.

Why not use your PDA to call the DO? It's got built in phone functionality

That relies on your management getting the correct office numbers programmed in, you can't just dial any number you want.
