Changing my 4 days to 5 days

I’m sure this will have been asked before but I’ve not had much joy with a search of this forum.

I was on a 5 day week then in the revision last month, 4 day weeks (every Weds/Thurs off) were on offer. I gladly snapped one up. There’s a few here who have been on those 4 day contracts for years. My new contract doesn’t list days off just simply my new number of hours.

I’ve been asked countless times since starting the 4 day week by line managers if I’d be willing to work the days off or swap the days off but I don’t want to.

Currently I’m on annual leave but informed by text that due to operational needs I will be going back to 5 days a week with a rolling day off (probably Tuesday as usual). None of the others here on 4 days have been told to go to 5 days.

Where do I stand here? I feel totally deflated, the 4 day weeks were a great life/work balance, I am much happier, more time to spend with my parents, easy to book little midweek holidays away and sort hospital appointments. Now I’m back to not knowing my day off until the Friday before. I feel like handing my notice in.

If you signed for that duty and pattern, they should need to give you 28 day's notice of any change I believe. If you're office does long and short days, you cannot have Tues off every week or you'd be working more hrs than you should in a week. If they start buggering you about, go off with stress and have some nice little breaks whenever you want to in the week.

Thank you. If I have to go to a 5 day week (with 28 day notice) so be it but I’ll insist on a rotating day off, either way I’ve texted my line manager to ask for clarification, as yet she’s not replied.

Hello I was asked to go to 3 days a week over ten years ago, anew manager arrived and gave us a choice of going to 4 or 5 days on the same hours we (around 10 of us) refused and got the union involved, through local then somebody from London intervened, was agreed that as royal mail had offered the new shifts and reduction in hours that they would have to stay, and when I left in March I was still doing the same hours.

Thanks for the reply. It’s a bit tricky when I’m the only one here being told/asked to move to 5 days, we all like to shout solidarity but in truth it’s very rare. If there were others being told to go to 5 days I’d feel more confident.

I’m back off annual leave tomorrow and will be asking my line manager to clarify and mention I’ll need 28 days notice.

Take it up with union,not at local level, and see where it takes you, can quote me, worst case scenerio it might delay things till after christmas .
