Dropping down in hours to transfer?

Hi all,

Just wondering if many have dropped down in hours to make a transfer happen and whether it’s worked out for them in the long run?

Currently on a 35 hour contract, would like to transfer to a closer office but the most they are offering me is 25 hours. Said I can expect plenty of overtime if I want it but still somewhat reluctant to lose 40 hours a month with the impact it has on relying on overtime and holiday etc.

I know some people at my current office have managed a transfer keeping their current hours, is it best going to a union rep over this?

10 years ago i dropped 5 hrs to go from 40 to 35. The new office was a lot nearer my home i found a better work life balance, within 3 years i managed to get back to FT. So in my case it was definatly worth it.

It’s standard that u drop down in hours. You should get made back up again in the 6th monthly review though depending on how your seniority stacks up at the new office, maybe check that with the rep there first.

i've seen several people transfer into ours and keep FT regardless that no vacancies were going in the office, one even walked straight into a single rural duty!
you need a decent "rep" who will bend the rules to screw over other paying PT members who were denied FT contracts even though they had seniority over those transferring in,
and yes, i speak from experience

That happens I've seen it a few times and it's often because the incoming postie has had a fallout with other posties or manager/bullying someone issue and rather than sacking them they've moved them to a different office where they've actually ended up better off.

I did it because I had to.
Going back to being a part time reserve was the most hateful 2 years of my RM career.
Screwed over daily by managers, colleagues and union for a pittance of a wage.
It screws with your pension as well.
But I kept my seniority which was handy in the revision and I am back with a full time contract.
I haven't forgotten though.

I had to drop to PT to move to an office 5-mins walk from my front door. Got rid of a car,saved myself £25 p/W in petrol & retained my FT contract within 12- months of moving office. Best thing I ever did but I took my years to finally get the transfer through…

I’ve just managed to get a transfer to my local office and I’ve managed to keep my full time hours to. I suppose sometimes it’s all about the timing.
