A Delivery Base is a fairly new concept within Royal Mail.

The idea behind a Delivery Base is to keep our postmen and women based close to the area in which they complete their deliveries and eliminate unproductive driving time – both in terms of duty time and personal commuting commitments.

A Delivery Base does not perform any indoor sorting and preparation work.

There are no delivery frames or other sorting equipment on the premises. The indoor work is completed in a neighbouring Delivery Office and then the route is bundled up and transported to the Delivery Base.

The postmen / women who work from the Delivery Base complete the outdoor door delivery once the work is handed over to them ready to go.

The Delivery Base acts as a meeting point with toilets and limited self-mess facilities, somewhere to store delivery equipment such as High Capacity Trolleys and a place to keep consumables such as P739 cards, elastic bands, de-icer etc.

The Delivery Base concept has proven popular where our colleagues are unable to drive or build a long commute into their routines. It allows them to stay local even if the indoor work consolidates into another location.

Delivery Bases are only used for a very limited amount of time each day as the mail is handed over, so it allows Royal Mail to partner with other companies to provide facilities at a much lower cost than maintaining our own estate.

Delivery Bases are not designed to house any mail overnight so undeliverable items are picked up on collection routes or pouched off at the local Post Office at the end of the route for return to the parent Delivery Office.

Our Delivery Base at Ballater operates from the local Stagecoach depot
• Our Delivery Bases at Acharacle and Mallaig use local community centres
• Our newest Delivery Base is just being set up at the local football club in
Barton-le-Clay, Bedfordshire
• Where singleton duties have moved out of closing SPDOs, it has been possible
to allow some of them to operate their routes from home

Sounds like what they were doing in Holland when they privatised the Mail. Delivery staff were meeting the van in the street without ever going to the depot

Sounds only really workable for areas that are very rural.
Roll something like that out in densely populated areas and it becomes a fight to see who gets to work remote and who has to go into office.

They wanted this around world class mail or just after it's down fall

I love that I've been in the job long enough to see the waxing and waning of various concepts: pouching off, dedicated parcel duties, bag drops, etc.

That's your new base of operations.

Nice idea, but will be poorly implemented. It's ideally decided on a area basis, otherwise it'll just cost time/money for the company.
