With petrol stations closing I 'm not sure I could get to work in the next couple of days. I live out in the sticks with about two buses a week. I have a diesel car so maybe they'd lend me some from the yard?

From here to Christmas the fuel crisis will have a huge effect on mail delivery’s to depots, knocking on to duty’s. Quite worrying . I’ve got a tankful and that’s about a weeks worth.

We can often struggle for enough mech trained staff so if we lost too many from a combination of sick, AL and those not able to get in through running out of petrol then we'd have to revert to walk sort only. If the packets and Tracked also end up being short on staff then we'd possibly have to revert to just running it on the iLSMs on the plan that does a basic split to DOs. We also don't have that many SD locker trained staff who aren't already in the SD locker

Getting to work is your problem, not the employers. The clue is in the fact that they only pay you from when your shift starts, what happens before or after isn't their problem. RM will be only be concerned about getting the fuel to run their own fleet. Aghast that this post was even created!

I would assume the Royal Mail bad weather policy would be applied, just walk into your nearest office and explain your situation, make sure to ring your own office first.

Maybe the government will invoke key worker priority, I wonder if we will be counted as key workers like we were during the pandemic, I doubt it.

That's only viable for those who work earlies or lates or those who work in a DO. For any of us who work nights, all the DOs will be shut and public transport is extremely limited at best.

But isn’t that the same in bad weather? What would you do in that situation? My point is I assume the same policy applies in both situations.

You could go to your petrol station and show them your RM I.D and ask if they'd sell you 10L. Most stations have a backup for emergency services.

Or just ring up and say you can't get in unless they lend you a van.

I never panic filled either. But i can get the bus but will ask if i can go to my local depot if i run out.

Petrol stations have ran out of fuel because people panic bought - there is no shortage of fuel.
Those who panic bought will return their cars back to their driveway and sit there with a full tank.
