D2Ds and converted houses...

Today I was moved from the walk I usually do (it isn't "my" walk btw, just one noone wants, so I didn't mind) and on delivery in a place I'm not remotely familiar with. Good thing was everything was prepped and ready for me to go (first time ever), but I did encounter some issues:

A couple of loops deliver to houses that have been converted into flats. Streets of the things. Mainly one door, one letterbox, and an indeterminate number of flats. I had D2Ds for these, but an absolute mass of D2Ds with very few corresponding letters leaves me wondering how many D2Ds I'm supposed to put through these letterboxes?

I deliver a D2D to nos 2 through 10, then come across a letter for no 6 flat 1 (this is where I realise these are converted houses). Another mass of around 20 D2Ds later and I have a letter for no 10 flat 3, etc. What are you supposed to do on a walk you don't know at all?

If I had no mail for these sorts of houses, I put 1 D2D through. If I had mail, I put enough D2Ds in for the highest flat number. Thus I took a big bundle of D2Ds back to the office...

Another little thing was a few specials for "XXX no 30" (I presume vinyl given the size, square, flat, do not bend). I get there and it's one of the exceptions with a variety of different doorbells and multiple boxes marked for each flat, but I don't know which flat it's for, just "XXX no 30". I got someone to the door who said "oh that's my fella", but they had a different name. I left a p739.

Anyone shed some light?

Regarding your last paragraph I hate it when something like that happens, someone who's regular on the duty will probably know which flat it is but that's no help when you're on the doorstep, tbh I'd have been stumped and would prob have phoned for advice,I can imagine it put you in a really difficult situation as you didn't know if they were genuine or not, maybe say this item requires me to see id for the name on it ? presumably it didn't go down too well when you said you can't have it then and wrote out a p739.

To be fair to the woman, she didn't seem remotely bothered about taking a card instead of the specials (I pointed out they had the flat number missing and can't leave with a neighbour).

That's a tricky one, eh? I think you've done the right thing. You can only deliver as addressed. It's up to the people living there to indicate individual delivery points within building. The good thing is you don't actually have to enter the building if it's locked and no other way of access. I'm guessing it's not a popular duty!

People (other posties) at the office were telling me it was an easy duty. It probably would have been if I didn't have the D2Ds.

It wasn't too bad if I'm honest, just unexpectedly inconvenient and I wasn't sure if I went about things the right sort of way.

If I cant get a flat number on the parcel matching a buzzer I just scan it incomplete as I dont know. Leave it for the pro postie. Today I had two parcels for the same flat labelled different. One said "House 20" flat 5, while the other said "House 20 " flat 3/1.

With 3/1 i couldnt tell what buzzer to press. With Flat 5 i couldnt tell what door to stick the card through. Common sense can get you the correct buzzer / letterbox 98% of the time. Safer option is to incomplete / inaccessible it if you are not sure. On my on duty i have no problem as i know all the people.

Imagine what hassle and trouble it would cause you if these went to the wrong person and they denied receiving them?
