I recently read the book 'Rebel City' by John Newsinger which is mainly about the Dublin tram and dock strike and eventual lockout of thousands of workers in 1913. Newsinger quotes writings by Sidney and Beatrice Webb from 1894 warning rank and file trade unionists about being sold out by their leaders. They start out as militants and having a sense of justice for the workers. Once up their among the other union beaurocrats, they soon lose any idea of writing wrongs even though they retain the socialist terminology, and concentrate on arranging compromises with the employers. Hayes and Ward are the perfect examples of this with the added ingredient of cow-towing to a government and political party the majority of those eligable to vote for do not want in power. These top union people are courted and flattered by the middle-class and eventually become middle-class themselves. If they are especially good at selling out the workers, they might land a seat in Westminster like Alan Johnson has done.

The agreement made with management by Hayes & Ward, is a poor one. It puts every unit rep under incredible pressure, for it's them, and them alone,
who now stand in the way of Royal Fail management's ceaseless pursuit of unnecessary major change, Royal Fail management's ceaseless drive to cut
overheads, even if those overheads are a necessity if there's to be even a semblance of a decent public service. This agreement made by Hayes & Ward,
is a sorry state of affairs, not worth the sacrifice of even one day's pay, let alone eight. If anything is guaranteed, it's that tens of thousands of postal
workers are going to finish 2008 in a job with worse conditions of work, and a management who won't stop there, but will be emboldened by the fact that
there appears to be nobody to check them as they relentlessly grind down the workforce.

MESSAGE TO CWU LEADERS: Be less understanding whenever Leighton & Crozier plead poverty, in fact, tell them enough is enough. Not another single
job will go, or a penny piece of any postal workers hard earned pension be stolen, but that it's not done until after damn good fight, a no-holds-barred fight,
a fight they'll probably relish to begin with, but one in which they'll quickly regret.

If there are elections in 2008, Hayes & Ward will not be getting my vote. In fact, any candidate who's a member of New Labour will most certainly not
get my vote. I've just about had it with "career" union leaders seeking "career" political appointments, and always at their members expense. Sod 'em.

Whatever Scargills failings, and rather shady financial dealings by all accounts, I never heard anyone say that he pandered to the bosses. He was always true to the membership that he represented even to the point of dissolution of the union practically. Misguided in his actions he may have been but he certainly enjoyed the trust and loyalty of his members.

I wonder how long a strike called by the muppet masters would last?

I feel that both Hayes and Ward have lets us down and certain members of the PEC, but if we want to replace them we have to choose replacements.

Does anyone know, or can recommend any such people and if so do you have any background or internet links to guide us on their political persuasions or stances on previous proposals and positions.

All information gladly welcomed even if it is biased at least we will get an idea of who we should or should not be voting for based on our own views and opinions.
