Anyone know if mail centres will be working Good Friday

Post by trythat »

The reason being last year, we got stuffed good and proper on delivery, as we had the Friday off, but the mail centres carried on working, so we had double plus on the Saturday, we had our group manager thing in today, and he didn't know, so I thought I find out and hopefully use it to our advantage.

Can't say for sure, but it is highly likely, unfortunately

The Mail Centres always work and get bank hol rates for doing so. The only reason the Delivery staff aren't asked in is COST. So basically delivery staff are expected to take 2 days work in 1!

Mail Centres usually work on Bank Holidays, but next year there will probably be a greatly reduced staffing as there will not be any Sunday or Bank Holiday collections to process and they will be looking for yet more savings.
Normally there would have been 200+ people on a 1000-1800 attendance in processing on Boxing Day and New Years Day at my MC, but this year there are only 70.
So it is likely there will be just a skeleton staff on Good Friday and not as much mail processed as there was this year.

People in our office are trying to book the sat off already, after the stuffing we had this year. The pressure seems to be getting to more and more people.

I will not work on Good Friday, I believe. As a baptised and confirmed member of the Anglo-Catholic wing of the CofE, I will follow and respect my faith, as others are allowed to in their beliefs, for their festive and otherwise days, and attend for the 11.30am Good Friday Mass.

Actually, only night staff work in mail centres on a Good Friday.

As with delivery staff costs, MC`s wont pay for early or afternoon staff to attend.

Don't care! I'm only contracted to work 5 hours on Saturdays. Guess how many hours I'll be working then. 5, how did you know that!
Does it really matter how much mail there is, Saturdays are a nightmare anyway, yes we have a shorter working day, but every Saturday is the same, shed loads of DSA and 2nd class mail, everything they couldn't get out on the Friday due to shoveling out the mailsort. Oh, and these light Tuesdays are an urban legend as well, except on that one day every 6 weeks when it's my day off apparently.

Work your hours, etc etc, it's been said a thousand times before. The only ones that will suffer (on deliveries) are the flyers and car users and they deserve it. (Before any car users have a go, it's up to RM to get you to your delivery point, bring your drop bags out and get you back to the office by your finish time.)

Anyway, at least we'll have Friday and Monday off. Hope those working in the MC's get O/T for the bank holidays they don't get.

Anybody seen the list of different religious days, you know Christmas, Easter for Christians. This list has the dates for Hindus, Islam, Buddhist and Jewism. Do you think you could constantly convert from one religion to the other. And why don't atheists have any? Is it discrimination?

o. 080/2008

Ref: 2.15/FH/JR/

Date: 4th February 2008

To: All Branches

Dear Colleague

Religious Festivals 2008

The Equal Opportunities Department thought it would be helpful if we notified Branches of the forthcoming Religious Festivals in 2008.

The following presents a very brief summary of some of the main Religious Festivals to be made aware of:

Buddhist:

Tuesday 20th May – Buddha Day

Christian:

Friday 21st March – Good Friday

Sunday 23rd March – Easter Sunday

Thursday 25th December – Christmas Day

Hindu

Tuesday 28th October – Diwali

Jain

Tuesday 28th October – Diwali

Jewish

Sunday 20th April – Passover

Tuesday 30th September – Rosh Hashanah

Thursday 9th October – Yom Kippur

Muslim

Tuesday 2nd September – start of Ramadan

Wednesday 1st October – Eid-Ul-Fitr

Thursday 11th December – Eid-Ul-Adha

Sikh

Monday 14th April – Birthday of Guru Nanak

Tuesday 28th October - Diwali

Branches should note that in relation to the two Eid Festivals, when making management aware of these religious holidays, it is worth pointing out that sometimes there can be some confusion about the exact day of the Festival and this is effectively dependant on the movement of the moon. Extending flexibility by one day either side of the dates listed should cater for any discrepancies. It is in the members interest that if they wish to take a religious holiday, maximum notice should be given to their employer.

If there are any queries relating to the other religious Festivals, our Department would refer you to the following comprehensive websites : www.bbc.co.uk/religion/tools/calendar/

Any enquiries on the above should be addressed to Michèle Emerson,

Assistant Secretary, quoting reference No. 2.15

Yours sincerely

Michèle Emerson
