Hernias

Anyone had one? What were your symptoms please? Did You have surgery and make a full recovery. Any advice appreciated.

8 had Hernia in our depot Scooby !! Including me One chap had 2 now, and gut feeling I heading for a second !!
Feels like groin strain-but burning sensation -treading water when you walking, so you will know
You get sent for a scan
Then Day surgery unit eventually
Recovery varies re age/extent of the damage etc
But 6 weeks around the norm re time off work once surgery done

Thanks mate interesting. Sounds about what I’m feeling.Are these work related in Your office? That’s a lot of hernias to be coincidence?

There are many types of hernia.
One of the most common is an inguinal hernia which is basically a design fault.
The surgeon told me virtually every man over 50 will have an inguinal hernia - it just might not be diagnosed.
They also don't operate until it becomes a serious problem - and that was before covid.

I’ve had a small hernia for 4/5 years… they will only do op if it is very painful or strangulated. If you are in Benenden Health Scheme you might be more lucky otherwise join the 5 milllion waiting list.

Where do you think your hernia is? Is it in your groin? If you have a lump in your groin that disappears when you lay down, you more than likely have an inguinal hernia. That happens because your muscle has torn and part of the bowel/stomach drops through the tear. I had an inguinal hernia 5 years ago, when I was 41. The doctor I saw put me on light duties immediately because of the risk of it becoming strangulated. My usual symptoms were a burning, dull pain in my groin. Very rarely the pain become intense and unbearable. On 2 occasions even though on light duties I ended up on the floor at work, the pain was that bad. Apparently I was quite a rare case and my doc hadn't seen anyone who was experiencing such high levels of pain!

But get yourself to the doctors asap, to have it confirmed. My doc gave me an ibuprofen type kind of pain killer, I forget what it was called. But it was a very strong pain killer, that I was only allowed to take when the pain was bad.

No problem when I’m in bed either.Feels dull and hot.No toilet problems but a slight pull if I cough or sneeze.Not a STD by the way.

Mine would ache occasionally, I’m retired now but when I worked I used to wear supported hernia underwear. They wasn’t cheap to buy £50 but they stopped things from getting worse.

That sounds like the beginning of an inguinal hernia. I had very similar symptoms/pain to what you're describing for about 2 weeks, I thought it was a groin strain to begin with, before I noticed the lump when I was stood up. I presume that the lump appeared because the tear in my muscle became bigger. I'd go and see your doc, they'll refer you for a scan.

Best of luck Scooby, it's concerning when health issues arise. I have a few 'ailments' myself. Hope you can get seen quickly. That hernia support sounds as if it may be useful in the meantime. But obviously, you need to get diagnosed properly first!

That's very interesting. I have one, but I am managing to work around it. Well, you have to really, the health service will not do anything further apart from a diagnosis until it's giving you constant pain and re-diagnosed as serious!

I had two inguinal hernias one side was a very noticeable lump which I thought was the worst ended up in A and E with strangled intestines to be told the other side hernia was restricting the testicular blood supply so my advice is get it checked
