Sorting after lunch?

Today we had 6 yorkes of parcels delivered late at 8.40am, when they should of been delivered 7am latest. This is getting more of a common problem. Usually, they just get failed. However, due to new management me and my colleagues where made to sort them at 9.15am until completion (3 of them where tracked items).

This is the time when a lot of people have tied their frames up, vans loaded, and reading to commence deliveries. Sorting of items has a scheduled time frame built into the working day from 6.40am-8am. Surely if it's passed that time, then management should just fail those items? Or at least ask for volunteers and offer o/t?

Me and the Union Rep both gave our disagreements to management over this issue. We where told that his operations manager had given the order for the above to happen and that there was nothing he could do. My question is, can they do this? also, if no, then is there an existing agreement I can point to, to prevent the above happening again.

As far as i am aware they can ask anything that is a "reasonable request" within your working hours, this seems reasonable enough, but in making you get out so late it is also reasonable to mention that you wont be able to complete your delivery.

8:40 am that's early!

Usually about 11am when they arrive in my office.

Just in time to be given to 'early starters and runners' HA HA.

'Sorting after lunch' .... am I the only one thinking 840 is a tad early for lunch ?
